There is no independently confirmed public record in the sources available establishing where Chris Kyle’s real combat rifle is today. A secondary report says a McMillan TAC-338 associated with Kyle is displayed at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington, but the museum has not been confirmed as the source of that claim. A widely cited auction result is often confused with Kyle’s rifle; it was for a rubber stunt prop used in the film American Sniper, not his combat weapon.
Is Chris Kyle’s real rifle on display in a museum?
A secondary article reports that Kyle’s final McMillan TAC-338 is displayed at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington. That report is not independently confirmed by a museum collection record or a statement from the museum in the available sources. The rifle’s present location therefore remains unverified; the Chehalis display should be described as a report, not an established fact.
Confirmation would require the museum to identify the firearm and provide provenance connecting it to Kyle. Without that documentation, it is not possible to say definitively that the rifle remains on display or that it is in the museum’s collection.
Was Chris Kyle’s rifle sold at auction?
The notable $23,940 auction result is not for Kyle’s real combat rifle. Propstore’s catalog identifies the item as a stunt MK13 sniper rifle made for the 2014 film American Sniper, in which Bradley Cooper portrayed Kyle. The catalog describes it as a dense rubber prop cast from a Remington Model 700. Propstore recorded a winning bid of $23,940 on August 16, 2024. Propstore’s listing identifies the object as a production prop, not a service-used firearm.

The distinction matters: a film prop associated with a portrayal of Kyle is not evidence that his actual rifle was sold. The auction record does not establish the location, ownership, or value of his combat rifle.
What was the $22,500 Chris Kyle-related auction?
A separate auction sometimes enters the discussion because it involved Kyle’s name and raised $22,500. Springfield Armory reported in 2016 that serial number CK0001 of its commemorative Legend Series 1911 TRP pistol was auctioned to benefit the Chris Kyle FROG Foundation. The $22,500 was the amount the company reported raising from that pistol auction; it was not a sale of Kyle’s rifle. Springfield Armory’s announcement describes the commemorative pistol and the charitable auction.

How to distinguish the objects
| Object | What the available record says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Kyle’s real combat rifle | A secondary article reports that a McMillan TAC-338 associated with him is displayed at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis. | The museum’s own confirmation, current location, provenance, or an authoritative valuation. |
| American Sniper stunt rifle | Propstore cataloged a rubber stunt MK13 prop and recorded a $23,940 winning bid on August 16, 2024. | A sale or valuation of Kyle’s real combat rifle. |
| Springfield Armory commemorative pistol | Springfield Armory reported $22,500 raised in 2016 from auctioning its CK0001 Legend Series 1911 TRP for the Chris Kyle FROG Foundation. | A sale or valuation of any rifle. |
When assessing claims about a historical firearm, identify the object first, then look for provenance or an institutional collection record. An auction catalog can document the sale of the object it describes; it cannot establish that a different firearm was sold.

No authoritative valuation of Kyle’s real rifle is established by these records. The film prop’s auction price and the charitable pistol auction are prices for different objects and should not be used as estimates for the combat rifle.
