In 2026 he spoke publicly about a long struggle with alcohol, repeated treatment and a slow recovery. In a March 2026 interview with the Irish Independent he said he had been sober for three years, and February and March 2026 reporting places him living on a farm in County Wexford, Ireland. The available reporting does not establish why his character’s story on Vikings ended, and it does not tie his addiction to that outcome.
What he has said about his drinking
The most detailed account comes from Niamh Horan’s interview in the Irish Independent, published 22 March 2026. The paper described it as his first major interview in almost ten years. Its headline quoted him directly: “I drank alone. I wanted oblivion all the time. I’d buy two bottles of vodka and lock the door.”
Early drinking and first treatment
Kendra Becker’s report for Goss.ie, dated 23 March 2026, summarises the same interview. It says Meyers started drinking in his mid-twenties and entered treatment by age 27. Those are his own recollections as reported in 2026, not dates confirmed from medical records.
Relapses and time in rehabilitation
The interview account says he relapsed over a long period and had been in and out of rehabilitation for almost 20 years. That is a cumulative picture, not a description of continuous treatment. Earlier coverage shows the struggle was already public before 2026. An RTÉ report dated 20 July 2018, headlined “Jonathan Rhys Meyers ‘very stupidly’ ordered a drink,” is a historical marker of that public record and says nothing about his current condition.

Sobriety and recovery
Meyers told the interviewer he had been sober for three years at the time, which places the start of that period around 2023. Treat this as his dated, personal account. It is not an independent medical verification, and the reporting does not describe any clinical assessment. He has described recovery as gradual. Goss.ie quotes him saying: “I’m exactly the same as everybody else. We’re all dealing with the same problem.”
Is he still acting?
Yes, according to the most recent reporting. Extra.ie’s 25 February 2026 piece says he continues his screen career, and the Irish Independent interview says he has been writing and working through his production company. Extra.ie’s headline ties his career back to The Tudors, the series most associated with his earlier profile. None of the reporting reviewed here lists specific upcoming projects, so no current credits should be assumed from these sources.

Why he left Vikings
The reporting does not explain his exit from Vikings. The 2026 interview covers a 2020 driving under the influence charge, a United States work visa that he said could not be renewed, the end of his marriage to Mara Lane, and his return to Ireland to recover. Those are personal and legal events he described himself, but none of the reports connects them to the production decisions behind the show. Any explanation linking his drinking to his leaving the series would go beyond the evidence.
Where he lives now
Extra.ie reported on 25 February 2026 that Meyers had moved to the Wexford countryside. He is quoted as saying: “I’m living on a farm in Wexford now.” He described a slower rural pace and joked about his new life: “So I’m an actor who lives on a farm, not a farmer who acts.” The same report says he keeps horses. Residence and family details can change, so the Wexford farm is the location reported in early 2026, not a confirmed present address.

The 2011 hospitalization
Early reports of a 2011 hospitalization were framed around a possible suicide attempt. In the 2026 interview, as reported by Goss.ie, Meyers denied that it was an attempt. He said he had been taken to hospital after a relapse and severe intoxication. The early headlines should not be treated as established fact. The 2026 account is his own explanation, and it is the only account of the event in the reporting reviewed here.
