Todd Herzog won Survivor: China, but he says the million-dollar prize did not end his working life or resolve his struggles with alcoholism. In interviews, he has described repeated rehabilitation stays and later finding a creative direction with his husband through Todd’s Pop Shop. His story is not a simple before-and-after: Herzog rejects the claim that Survivor caused his addiction, and the public account of his 2013 Dr. Phil appearance remains disputed.
What happened to Todd Herzog after Survivor?
Herzog won the 15th season of Survivor, Survivor: China, as identified in The Survivor Buff’s August 4, 2025 episode listing. The victory brought a million dollars, but, by his recollection, it did not mean he stopped working. In a 2025 interview, he said he worked at Starbucks after the show and later as a server. [c002]

That detail complicates the familiar image of a reality-show winner whose life is remade by prize money. Herzog’s own account is about a longer, less tidy path: work, addiction, difficult treatment experiences, and eventually a creative business he built with his husband.
How does Herzog describe his struggles with alcoholism?
Herzog has spoken publicly about alcoholism, but he disputes the idea that the show’s fame caused it. Asked about that explanation in the 2025 interview, he said, “I disagree with that completely.” [c002] That is his view of his own experience; the available interviews do not establish a medical explanation for the causes of his addiction.

He also described going to ten rehabilitation programs and said he did not want to be at any of them. [c002] This is a personal account of difficult treatment experiences, not advice about what treatment should look like for someone else. The recovery details here come from Herzog’s interviews rather than independent medical records, so they should be understood as what he has chosen to share publicly.
What is known about the 2013 Dr. Phil appearance?
The episode became the subject of conflicting public accounts. In a December 2017 report, Global News said Herzog alleged that he arrived sober for his 2013 Dr. Phil appearance, found vodka in his dressing room, and was given Xanax. The same report said Martin Greenberg, a psychologist associated with the show, denied Herzog’s account. [c004]

Those claims should remain attributed: Herzog made the allegation, and a show-associated representative denied it. The available reporting does not establish the disputed events as fact.
How did Herzog turn toward creative work?
In the 2025 interview, Herzog described working at a movie theater until COVID-era closures halted that work, then beginning to make custom figures. That effort grew into Todd’s Pop Shop. [c002] An August 2026 interview listing describes Herzog and his husband creating custom artwork through the business. [c003]

The art and business mark a change in the work he has discussed publicly, but they do not erase the complexity of his earlier experiences. The 2026 listing frames the conversation around rebuilding after alcoholism and discovering art; it does not independently establish Herzog’s current sobriety status. [c003]

It is more accurate to describe change in terms Herzog has shared than to present a neat redemption arc. He has talked about working after his win, rejecting a simplistic cause-and-effect story about Survivor and addiction, facing repeated rehabilitation stays, and building a creative business with his husband. Those are meaningful shifts in his public story, while the private and medical details remain his to define.
