The Avatar RPG announced by Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive in October 2024 was not in production when Paramount Games began its new iteration, Paramount executive Shawn Kittelsen told IGN in June 2026. He left open the possibility of a AAA Avatar game in a different iteration, but did not confirm that another game has been approved. No release date is confirmed in the sources reviewed.
What did Paramount and Saber announce?
In October 2024, Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive announced a new AAA game set in the Avatar Legends universe, in collaboration with Avatar Studios. Trade coverage described it as an action RPG. Avatar Legends is the franchise setting that includes the worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. IGN’s announcement coverage reported the partnership and the game’s broad description.
What was the planned story and gameplay?
The announced concept followed an all-new Avatar in an original story set thousands of years before Aang’s story. The plan included mastering the four elements, dynamic combat, companions, and choices tied to the Avatar’s role as keeper of balance. These were descriptions of the proposed game, not verified features of a released or playable product. GameSpot’s report on the announced premise covered those details.
The sources reviewed do not establish gameplay footage, confirmed platforms, or a release date. A launch year, project codename, or detailed mechanics should not be treated as official facts.

Is the Avatar RPG canceled?
The clearest public status update came in June 2026, when Shawn Kittelsen, Paramount Games Studio’s senior vice president and head of creative and production, discussed the project with IGN. As reported by Engadget, Kittelsen said: “That’s a project that wasn’t in production when we came in. We didn’t start this iteration of Paramount Games until last fall, after the Paramount Skydance merger. So that game was not in production.”
That supports a careful answer: the project was not in production when the new Paramount Games organization began, according to Kittelsen. It does not, by itself, establish contract terms, describe a formal cancellation decision, or show whether Saber might return to a future project.

Could another AAA Avatar game still happen?
Kittelsen said, “So doesn’t mean you won’t get a AAA Avatar game at some point, but it might come in a different iteration.” That is an expressed possibility, not confirmation of a greenlit replacement, a new development team, or a schedule.
Paramount’s June 2026 announcement of a unified Paramount Games Studio describes the combination of Paramount and Skydance gaming operations. It provides context for Kittelsen’s reference to a new studio iteration, but does not give project-specific cancellation or contract details.

Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the franchise world; it is not the announced Saber and Paramount video game. It may suit fans looking to create stories in that setting, but its format and status are distinct from the unreleased action RPG. Magpie Games’ Avatar Legends page describes the tabletop game.
