Hater, the dating app that matched people through shared dislikes, is no longer operating. It appeared on Shark Tank Season 9 in 2017, and secondary updates report that founder Brendan Alper accepted Mark Cuban’s offer of $200,000 for 10% equity. Hater reportedly shut down in June 2019; the reason has not been confirmed.

What was Hater?

Hater was a digital dating service, not a physical product. Its premise was to connect people based on things they disliked: users reacted to topics, and the app used shared negative opinions as a way to find potential matches. SlashGear describes the app and its appearance on the show.

When did Hater appear on Shark Tank, and what was the deal?

The episode listing places Hater in Season 9, Episode 12, which aired November 26, 2017. TV Guide’s Season 9 episode listing gives the episode date.

Secondary company updates report that Alper accepted Mark Cuban’s offer of $200,000 for 10% equity. These are reported deal terms; the available accounts do not include a primary investment document. In a quote reproduced by SlashGear, Alper said he wanted Cuban because of his technology experience and connections. That is SlashGear’s account of the episode, rather than a verified transcript.

Is Hater still in business?

No. Multiple secondary update pages report that Hater ceased operating in June 2019. A retrospective also says the app had disappeared from app stores and social media by that period. Shark Tank Blog’s company update and TheThings’ retrospective describe the closure.

Why did Hater shut down?

A definitive reason has not been established in the available accounts. Some coverage speculates that monetization or profitability may have been difficult, but it does not provide a confirmed explanation from Alper or the company. It would therefore be misleading to state that a particular business problem caused the shutdown.

What happened to founder Brendan Alper?

Secondary coverage links Alper to a later venture called Everbloom. The sources do not establish his current role or the venture’s present status, so that connection should not be read as a current update.
