Did ageism play a role in her elimination?
Christopher did not give a definitive yes or no. In a 2020 interview excerpt relayed by Fox News, she said she had “mixed feelings” about whether ageism was a factor. She described herself as active and good at sports, and said she had not realized some contestants might see her as an old lady. Fox News’s account of the interview preserves that qualified response.
Is Sonja Christopher still alive?
No. Christopher died in 2024 at age 87, according to TVLine. Fox News reported at the time that no cause of death had been shared; no cause is established in the cited accounts.

What do viewers remember about her?
Christopher brought a ukulele to the island and serenaded her tribemates, a detail noted in the Associated Press account and TVLine’s retrospective. After her death, host Jeff Probst remembered her warmly, saying, “Sonya was one of the kindest people to ever play Survivor,” and that every interaction he had with her over the years was lovely. TVLine spells her name “Sonya” in the quoted statement; the contestant’s name is Sonja.
