Brightwheel is still operating. Its founder, Dave Vasen, pitched the company on Shark Tank on April 29, 2016, the air date Brightwheel announced beforehand. Shortly afterward the company said Mark Cuban and Chris Sacca had invested a combined $600,000 through the show. The product that exists today is considerably broader than the mobile tool described in 2016: it is a childcare and early education platform with iOS and Android apps, a teacher web portal, billing, family communication, and learning tools.
What Brightwheel pitched in 2016
On April 18, 2016, Brightwheel announced that Vasen would present the company on ABC’s Shark Tank later that month. The announced product was mobile software for daycare, preschool, and after-school programs, organized around three groups of users:
- Teachers could track attendance, record classroom observations, and share photos and notes.
- Administrators could manage classrooms and send paperless tuition invoices.
- Families could stay connected to what their child did during the day.
Vasen framed the show as a place to find both an investor and a strategic adviser. That framing matters for the rest of the story, because the investors’ value to the company was partly advisory rather than purely financial.
The deal: what was confirmed and what was reported
On May 2, 2016, Brightwheel announced it had raised $600,000 from Cuban and Sacca through the show. The company said the two investors first pursued the opportunity individually and then participated together.

The company’s announcement is the primary source for the total. It does not give each investor’s contribution or the equity stake. A 2026 SlashGear article reports a $300,000 contribution from each investor for a combined 6.67% stake. That breakdown comes from secondary reporting, not from Brightwheel’s 2016 release.

Both investors were quoted in the 2016 release. Cuban said: “Brightwheel has a great product, is growing like crazy, and makes life easier for teachers and parents.” Sacca said: “As a dad of three kids under five, I’ve experienced this problem myself.”

Brightwheel says it offers flexible plans tailored to program size and needs, and it directs prospective customers to request a personalized quote. No fixed public price list is given in the company’s current material. Any price from the 2016 pitch period no longer describes the product and should not be treated as current.
Service status on October 8, 2026
Brightwheel’s status page listed its iOS app, Android app, website, and web app as operational on October 8, 2026. That is a snapshot for one date. It does not guarantee uninterrupted availability, so check the status page directly if a live outage is the issue.

Brightwheel’s FAQ states that the company does not currently hold SOC 2 certification. It describes the following safeguards and policies instead:
- Two-factor authentication
- PCI Level 1 payment processing
- A policy against selling personal information to third parties
- Data retention for service and for legitimate business, legal, and compliance purposes
Providers evaluating the platform for a school or center should raise the SOC 2 point during procurement and ask for the documentation they need, rather than assuming it is covered.
