At the May 6, 2024 Met Gala, photographers’ remarks to Stray Kids during a red-carpet photo session drew criticism from fans, who described them as racist, mocking and unprofessional. Several news outlets reported remarks about the members’ expressions, instructions to pose or jump, and a photographer saying “Arigato” to the Korean group. The clips and reporting document what was said and how fans reacted; they do not establish the identity or intent of every speaker.
What happened as Stray Kids posed at the Met Gala?
Stray Kids attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Met Gala in New York on May 6, 2024. The eight-member South Korean group wore custom Tommy Hilfiger looks. Contemporary coverage described it as the first time a full K-pop group attended together (The Korea JoongAng Daily; CNA Lifestyle; The Korea Times).
Clips circulated online as the members posed for photographers and changed from long coats into coordinated suits. In reports about the footage, photographers were heard making remarks that included, “I’ve never seen so many unemotional faces in my life.” Other accounts quoted photographers calling the members “robots” and telling them to pose “with feeling” or “Everybody jump.” The specific remarks quoted vary among reports; they should not be treated as a single complete transcript.
What did photographers say about the group?
The comments reported in the clips concerned the members’ expressions and how they should pose. Fans objected to the combination of remarks about looking unemotional with repeated directions to show more feeling or jump. The Korea JoongAng Daily, CNA Lifestyle, The Korea Times and The Straits Times reported overlapping accounts of the circulating footage, though not every outlet quoted every remark (The Straits Times).

Coverage also described a photographer asking how to say “right” in Korean, then saying “Arigato,” Japanese for “thank you.” Reports characterized this as a culturally disrespectful misidentification directed at a Korean group. The available accounts do not establish what the speaker intended.
Why did fans call the remarks racist?
Fans criticized the remarks online as racist, discriminatory, rude or unprofessional. They objected both to comments that seemed to mock the members’ expressions and to the “Arigato” exchange, which they viewed as disrespectful toward a Korean group. Calling the remarks racist reflects fans’ interpretation of the conduct; it is not proof of the individual speakers’ motives or identities.
