Steve Buscemi was stabbed during a bar incident in Wilmington, North Carolina, in April 2001, while he was there filming Domestic Disturbance with Vince Vaughn. Contemporary reporting said he was treated at a hospital and released. Buscemi later said he was trying to leave after an earlier altercation had been broken up when another man confronted him with a knife. The available accounts document the incident, but do not establish that it made Buscemi a “way better friend” or changed his friendship with Vaughn.
What happened to Steve Buscemi in the Wilmington bar fight?
ABC News reported on April 13, 2001, citing police, that Buscemi was stabbed in the head, throat, and arm at the Firebelly Lounge at about 2 a.m. on April 12. He was treated at a hospital and released. Buscemi and Vaughn were in Wilmington filming Domestic Disturbance.
A witness told ABC that trouble began after Vaughn spoke with a local man’s girlfriend and the group went outside. That account does not establish the motive or describe every part of the altercation. ABC News’ April 13 report is a contemporary account, not a firsthand narration by Buscemi.
Why was Steve Buscemi stabbed?
In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Buscemi described the sequence from his perspective. He said there had been trouble between Vaughn and another man, and that the dispute was broken up. As the group was trying to leave, another person began speaking to him; Buscemi said they exchanged words, the man pulled a knife, and they wrestled. Buscemi said he “got the worst of it.” Read his account in The Guardian’s 2013 interview.

That account helps explain how Buscemi said he became involved, but it should not be conflated with the witness account in the initial news report. Neither source establishes a definitive motive for the stabbing.
What did Buscemi say about the incident afterward?
In a June 2001 interview with The Guardian, Buscemi called it “a scary thing to go through” and said, “Considering what it could have been, I came out of it okay.” He declined to discuss the fight in detail, explaining that he might be called as a witness if there were a trial. The Guardian’s June 2001 interview records his reaction at the time.

Was Vince Vaughn involved, and what happened legally?
Vaughn was part of the earlier altercation, according to the contemporary reporting and Buscemi’s later account. That is distinct from the stabbing itself: Buscemi said another man confronted him with the knife after the earlier trouble had been broken up.
ABC News reported on June 1, 2001, that Vaughn and screenwriter Scott Rosenberg entered Alford pleas to misdemeanor assault charges. An Alford plea is treated as a guilty plea for sentencing, although the defendant does not admit guilt. The report also described court conditions including alcohol counseling and a ban on downtown Wilmington bars. ABC News’ June 1 legal follow-up reported that Timothy Fogerty had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with the stabbing, and that Vaughn and Rosenberg were expected to testify. That source does not establish the final disposition of Fogerty’s case, so the charge should not be described as a conviction.

A 2005 New Yorker profile by John Lahr also recounted that Buscemi broke up a fight between Vaughn and a local man and was cut in a subsequent scuffle involving a man with a hunting knife. It offers retrospective context, not proof of a later change in Buscemi and Vaughn’s relationship. Read the 2005 New Yorker profile.

The documented facts support a story about Buscemi’s intervention in an earlier dispute, his injury in a subsequent confrontation, and his own account of trying to leave. The cited interviews and reporting do not say the episode made him a better friend or changed his friendship with Vaughn. Calling it a turning point in their relationship would go beyond what these accounts establish.
