In Maureen Dowd’s January 2009 Vanity Fair profile, Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond, described a stranger cutting Fey’s face when she was five, in the front yard of her home. A contemporaneous TV Guide account also reported that a stranger approached her in the yard and slashed her face. The injury left a scar on her left cheek; the profile describes it as faint.
The reporting does not identify the stranger, establish a motive, or provide further investigative details. There is no basis in these accounts to add a weapon, suspect, or police outcome.
What has Fey said about the scar?
Fey told Vanity Fair, “It’s impossible to talk about it without somehow seemingly exploiting it and glorifying it.” Her comment is a reminder to keep the story in proportion: she has acknowledged the event, while also explaining why she does not often discuss it.

She also described being largely unaware of the scar as a child, then noticing it in the context of appearing on camera: “I proceeded unaware of it. I was a very confident little kid. It’s really almost like I’m kind of able to forget about it, until I was on-camera, and it became a thing of ‘Oh, I guess we should use this side’ or whatever. Everybody’s got a better side.”
