There was no official Samsung product called “Samsung Play Music.” The name usually mixes up Google Play Music, which Google once made the default music player and service on certain Samsung devices, with Samsung Music, Samsung’s separate app for playing music files. Google retired Google Play Music and made YouTube Music its successor; Samsung Music remains a separate app, subject to device and regional availability.
Three different music products—not one Samsung service
The names are easy to confuse, especially if you remember an app on an older Galaxy phone. But the products had different owners and purposes:

So if you are looking for the former Google streaming service, Samsung Music is not a replacement for its catalog or cloud library. If you want to play MP3s or other supported files already on a Galaxy phone, Samsung Music may be the app you remember—or the one you need.

In April 2017, Google and Samsung announced a partnership that made Google Play Music the default music player and service on new Samsung phones and tablets covered by the arrangement, starting with the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Tab S3. Google—not Samsung—provided the service. The companies promoted a three-month offer for eligible purchasers, expanded personal-library uploads of up to 100,000 songs for eligible Samsung customers, and planned Bixby integration. That arrangement explains why some Galaxy owners remember “Play Music” as part of the Samsung experience. It does not mean Samsung owned Google Play Music or operated a service called Samsung Play Music.
What happened to Google Play Music—and its library?
Google retired Google Play Music in 2020 and positioned YouTube Music as its successor. The old app is not a way to access the former service now, and reinstalling Samsung Music will not bring back Google’s streaming catalog or cloud locker.
It helps to separate what “my music” might mean:

- Streaming catalog: Access depended on Google Play Music’s service and account. YouTube Music is Google’s successor, but it is not safe to assume every former catalog item or subscription entitlement is available in the same way.
- Uploaded songs and playlists: These were associated with a Google account and Google’s service, not stored in Samsung Music. Check the relevant Google account and YouTube Music library or history for anything that may have transferred. Do not assume every upload or playlist is recoverable.
- Purchased tracks: Purchases are distinct from uploads and subscription downloads. Check the original Google account and its available library or purchase records; do not assume every purchase can still be downloaded or that it migrated automatically.
- Offline subscription downloads: These are generally service-controlled cached files, not ordinary MP3s that can be imported into another player.
If a playlist or upload is missing, first confirm you are signed into the Google account you used with Play Music and inspect YouTube Music. Reinstalling Samsung Music is unlikely to help with Google-hosted data. For account-specific recovery, rely on current Google account and YouTube Music options; availability and retention can depend on the account and may change.
Milk Music was another product entirely
Samsung’s Milk Music was its own streaming and radio service, not Google Play Music. In the United States, Samsung announced on August 19, 2016, that the service would sunset on September 22, 2016, describing a move toward partnerships with outside music providers. (Samsung’s U.S. statement.)
The history was not identical everywhere. Samsung’s Korean support documentation describes Milk Music functionality being integrated into Samsung Music beginning October 24, 2017, with later app changes ending playback through the old Milk Music app. That Korean timeline should not be treated as a worldwide shutdown or replacement date. What Samsung Music does now
Samsung Music is a distinct Samsung-developed Android app. Samsung presents it as optimized for Samsung mobile devices, and its Google Play listing identifies Samsung Electronics as the developer. The listing names formats including MP3, AAC and FLAC, while noting that supported formats can vary by device. Samsung also describes Spotify-related synchronization or recommendations in supported contexts; that is not the same as Samsung Music itself providing Spotify’s full streaming catalog. Find or reinstall Samsung Music
- Open the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store and search for Samsung Music.
- Check that the developer is Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. before installing or updating.
- Open the app and allow music/audio or storage access if Android requests it.
- Look in the library or folder view for files stored on the phone or an accessible SD card.
If the app does not appear in the store, it may not be offered for that model, market or carrier edition, or the device may not meet the current app requirements. It may also be hidden or disabled rather than uninstalled. Samsung support has cited Android 5.0 or later as a compatibility baseline in its documentation, but that historical baseline is not a guarantee that every older device can install the current build. The store’s compatibility result for your particular device is more useful.

If files show in a file manager but not in Samsung Music, check that the app has permission to access them, that the format is supported on your device, and that the files are actually stored locally or on accessible storage. Media indexing may take time, particularly after a transfer or SD-card change. Files protected by DRM or kept only in another service’s offline cache generally will not behave like ordinary music files.
Do not download old Google Play Music APKs from unofficial sites. An old app build cannot restore a discontinued service’s servers, and unofficial downloads can pose security, account and compatibility risks.

Choose a replacement by what you want to do

Before choosing, decide whether your priority is local files or streaming. Then consider whether you need to recover Google-account library data, move playlists between services, or simply listen to music you own. Subscription prices, trials, catalogs and features vary by country and change over time, so check the service’s current terms in your market.

Why Samsung may promote several music services
Samsung’s history points to partnerships rather than one exclusive, all-purpose Samsung streaming service: it worked with Google Play Music on certain 2017 devices, has surfaced Spotify-related features through Samsung Music in supported contexts, and announced Amazon Music placement on selected Galaxy devices in 2026. The Amazon announcement describes a partnership and offer, not the shutdown of Samsung Music. The app and partner features can vary across markets and devices.
In short: Google Play Music ended as a Google service; Milk Music had a separate, market-specific history; and Samsung Music is a different app that remains listed for local playback. The right next step depends on whether you are trying to recover an old Google library, play files on your phone, or subscribe to a streaming service.
