Peri Brown appeared to die in the 1986 Doctor Who serial “Mindwarp.” A later short, “The Eternal Mystery,” presents a different account: Peri survives, spends part of her life with King Yrcanos, and eventually reunites with the Sixth Doctor. It was made to promote a Blu-ray set for a different season, which is why this answer to a Season 23 story appeared in a Season 22 trailer.
What happened to Peri Brown in “Mindwarp”?
Perpugilliam “Peri” Brown, played by Nicola Bryant, traveled with both the Fifth and Sixth Doctors. Her apparent televised exit comes in “Mindwarp,” the second story in Season 23’s season-long “Trial of a Time Lord” narrative.
In the serial, alien Mentor Kiv undergoes brain surgery using Peri’s body, leaving her memories and personality apparently overwritten. Yrcanos reacts as though Peri has been killed. That is the disturbing outcome the television story implies; it is not the only later account of her fate.
What does “The Eternal Mystery” say happened?
The short “The Eternal Mystery,” written and directed by Peter McTighe, presents Peri as having survived. In the account summarized by James Whitbrook’s January 20, 2022 report for Gizmodo, she lives with Yrcanos for part of her life. After Yrcanos dies, she reunites with the Sixth Doctor and returns annually to honor her husband.

This is the trailer’s version of events, not a reason to treat every earlier book or audio story as part of one seamless explanation. The short offers a later answer to the apparent death on screen, but Doctor Who’s expanded stories had already revisited Peri’s fate in differing ways.
How does the trailer fit with earlier Doctor Who stories?
Books and audio dramas had previously explored more than one retrospective resolution. Broadly, those versions include accounts in which Peri’s memories are restored and she lives with Yrcanos, and others in which the Time Lords return her to Earth with some memories erased. The available report does not identify which individual publication contains each detail, so those plot points should not be assigned to specific books or audios here.

The useful distinction is that the televised serial, expanded media, and “The Eternal Mystery” do not provide a single uncontested chain of events. The television story implies a tragic end; expanded media supplied varying outcomes; and the short presents its own account of Peri surviving and remembering Yrcanos.
