Owen Wilson has described breaking his nose twice: once during childhood roughhousing and once while playing intramural flag football at the University of Texas. The accounts establish the incidents he has discussed, but not a precise medical diagnosis or whether he later had surgery.
What Owen Wilson said happened
In a 2022 WIRED interview, Wilson answered a question about how he broke his nose: “At University of Texas, yeah. Playing, we were doing intermural flag football, and I got banged but also I think just like, as a kid, just rough housing.” The transcript preserves his wording, including “intermural.” Read the WIRED interview.
His answer describes two incidents: an earlier injury during childhood roughhousing and a later one during football at the University of Texas.
How the earlier accounts describe the injuries
Profiles published in 2001 and 2002 give more detail, though they phrase the first incident differently. The Los Angeles Times reported that Wilson broke his nose twice: once in a high-school scuffle and once playing football with friends. The 2001 profile describes the incidents in the newspaper’s narration, not as a direct quotation from Wilson.
TIME likewise reported two breaks, placing the first in ninth grade and the second during football at the University of Texas. Its 2002 profile also recorded Wilson’s response to questions about having his nose fixed: “I get bombarded with those questions,” he said, adding, “I must look like a freak, but if I were to change it I would get so much grief from my brothers.” Read the TIME profile.

Those comments document that Wilson was asked about changing his nose at the time. They do not confirm that he later had a procedure. The interview and profiles cited here do not specify the exact anatomy or severity of either injury, whether either affected his breathing, or whether he underwent rhinoplasty, septoplasty, or reconstructive surgery. A claim about a particular diagnosis or later treatment would go beyond what these accounts establish.
A contemporaneous Guardian interview also discussed Wilson’s nose and the two breaks, offering additional context without changing what can be established from the accounts above. Read the Guardian interview.
