The band’s announcement did not give a detailed reason. Gerard Way explained the decision more fully in later interviews, describing creative exhaustion, pressure from expectations after The Black Parade, and a need to escape the industry “machine.” The band announced a reunion performance in 2019.
What did My Chemical Romance say when it split?
In March 2013, My Chemical Romance posted a brief statement saying that its 12 years together had been “a true blessing” and that “it has come time for it to end.” The announcement did not identify a specific cause or describe a dispute. Gerard Way, quoted at the time, said: “Beyond any sadness, what I feel the most is pride.” The Guardian reported the announcement on March 23, 2013, after the band posted its statement the previous day.
Why did they split?
The clearest explanation came from Way in later interviews, not from the band’s original announcement. He described a mix of creative strain and pressure rather than presenting a feud as the cause.
Making music stopped being fun
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, Way said: “It wasn’t fun to make stuff any more. I think breaking up the band broke us out of that machine.” He connected the split to the difficulty of continuing to create under the pressures surrounding the group. Read the interview.

Expectations made the next direction difficult
Way said cracks had appeared while the band was working on Danger Days, which was scrapped and rewritten. After The Black Parade, he recalled, people had strong ideas about what My Chemical Romance should be. That made it harder to settle on a new direction and raised the question of whether the band’s next work could ever meet expectations.
Way felt he could no longer make the expected music
In a 2014 GRAMMY.com interview around the release of his solo album Hesitant Alien, Way described the change as personal as well as creative: “I just couldn’t make the kind of music that we were going to make anymore.” He also said expectations had formed around what he and the band were supposed to make. Some of the songs on Hesitant Alien addressed the end of the group. Read the interview.

When did My Chemical Romance reunite?
The band publicly announced a reunion performance in 2019, scheduling a Los Angeles show for December 20. That announcement followed the 2013 split. The Associated Press later reported that the members had privately reunited in 2017, before making their return public. Read the Associated Press report.

The public record supports Way’s retrospective account of creative exhaustion, mounting expectations and pressure around the band. It does not provide a complete account of private discussions or a detailed explanation from every member. The later interviews should therefore be understood as Way’s explanation, not as a formal statement agreed by the whole band.
