Max survives. At the end of season 4, Vecna attacks her and her body is left in a coma. In season 5, the show reveals that her consciousness is trapped in Vecna’s mental prison, a landscape built from his memories that the characters call Camazotz. She hides in a cave inside that mental world, helps Holly find a way back to reality, and eventually wakes after nearly two years in a coma, with Lucas beside her. By the finale she and Lucas finally go on their long-awaited movie date and settle down together.
Where Max is for most of season 5
Max is not simply unconscious for the whole season. Her physical body stays in Hawkins, in a coma. Her mind is caught inside Vecna’s memory world, so the season’s Max story happens in that mental landscape rather than in the hospital or the Upside Down.
That distinction matters for reading the season correctly. The cave where Max hides is part of Vecna’s mental prison, not a literal cave in Hawkins, and Max is not physically living in the Upside Down.

The attempted escape and the Kate Bush portal
Netflix’s episode 4 explainer describes the moment Max nearly gets out. She reaches a memory tied to the night Vecna tried to kill her, and a portal to the real world opens. It closes when Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” stops playing in her hospital room. The song is the thread that links her body to the waking world, so when the music cuts out, the route collapses.
Vecna then hunts her through memories. She eventually finds shelter in a cave system he avoids, which is where the season leaves her for a long stretch.

Camazotz, the mindscape, and “Vecna’s prison”
The show’s name for the place is Camazotz. Sadie Sink told Entertainment Weekly, in an interview later republished by AOL, that the writers used “mindscape” internally, while Camazotz became the name that reached the screen. Max herself refers to it as “Vecna’s prison.”
Readers will see both labels in discussion of the season. Camazotz is the on-screen name; “mindscape” is the working term Sink described from the writers’ room, and “Vecna’s prison” is how Max frames her situation within the story.

Holly and the way out
Max’s relationship with Holly gives her a reason to act rather than wait to be rescued. According to the episode 7 recap, the two find an exit in the red void. Max realizes that an opening glimpsed earlier, the one with Lucas carrying her, is her own route out, not Holly’s. She tells Holly that music is not the only possible link to the real world.
Holly’s Dungeons & Dragons figure, Holly the Brave, stands for the kind of connection that can anchor her. The episode presents that idea as the reason Max’s advice matters: a link to reality does not have to be a song.

What Sadie Sink says about playing it
In the Entertainment Weekly interview, republished by AOL and dated November 27, 2025, Sink says she was curious how Max would cope alone inside Vecna’s world. She describes the Max and Holly pairing as one of the season’s unexpected pleasures, with the two finding allies in each other.
On playing the trauma, Sink chose restraint. She describes Max’s experience as something played inward and matter-of-fact rather than as constant outward display. Her most quoted line on the subject: “Being unconscious, honestly, wasn’t a bad gig at the end of the day.”
