What happened backstage at Australian Idol?
Hines collapsed in her dressing room at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill on Sunday, 24 March 2024, while the semi-final was being filmed. She was taken to hospital by ambulance and missed that evening’s episode. Guest judge Guy Sebastian filled in. PerthNow reported the incident and quoted Hines’s initial message; 7NEWS later covered her hospitalisation and return.

What did Marcia Hines say about the collapse?
Her first message said she was unwell
In a 24 March Instagram message quoted by PerthNow, Hines said: “It’s been a big few days of work and I was feeling a little unwell. I’m resting up now so I can be back with you all tomorrow night.” The message did not name a cause.
Her later explanation was a urinary tract infection
On 2 April, 7NEWS reported that Hines had told The Daily Telegraph she had been suffering from a UTI. As quoted by 7NEWS, she recalled: “I was sitting down, stood up and fell over.” The report also said she sustained a small forehead injury that required stitches.

Hines returned for the grand finale on 25 March, the night after the collapse. 7NEWS reported that she persuaded her doctor to allow her to film and quoted her description of the decision: “That’s show business.” After filming, she went back to hospital and stayed for several more days, according to 7NEWS’s 2 April report. She also thanked people who had contacted her.
