Its investigation gives the story a procedural backbone, while graphic body horror and increasingly elaborate lore can overwhelm the mystery. Viewers looking for a grounded, tightly resolved detective drama may come away frustrated.
Mandala Murders: the premise and viewing details
The eight-episode Hindi thriller follows a detective and an ex-cop investigating ritualistic murders connected to their pasts. Mandala clues and missing body parts draw the investigation toward a secret society, an old curse and the attempted revival of Yast. The premise begins as a murder mystery and grows into something more speculative.
Netflix announced the series’ premiere for July 25, 2025. Gopi Puthran created it and directed alongside Manan Rawat; YRF Entertainment produced it. The principal cast includes Vaani Kapoor, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Surveen Chawla and Shriya Pilgaonkar. Netflix’s title page lists a 16+ maturity rating and labels the show a thriller. It lists Hindi original audio alongside English, Tamil and Telugu; catalog and language options can vary by territory. Netflix’s announcement and its title page provide the official details.
Does the investigation make for a satisfying procedural?
The murder cases give the series a useful point of entry: clues, victims and police work are easier to follow than the mythology that accumulates around them. In her Scroll review, Deepa Gahlot calls the procedural the show’s relative strength; her headline describes it as “Gruesome shocks and a decent police procedural.” That is a critic’s characterization, not a promise of a conventional case-of-the-week format.

As the story expands, ritual practices and speculative explanations compete with the investigation for attention. The central critical question is whether that mythology makes the murders feel more compelling or simply harder to follow. The reviews differ on how well the ambition works: India Today praises the world-building but finds the threads tangled and the payoff weak, while The Indian Express praises the atmosphere and visual impact while criticizing the convoluted plotting. These are individual reviews, not an audience consensus.
Atmosphere, performances and visual impact
The series’ strongest appeal is its ominous mood. Ritual imagery and a sense of buried history give the investigation a distinctive visual world, and reviewers singled out the atmosphere even when they disagreed about whether the story’s ideas held together. Its ambition may suit viewers who want a crime thriller to venture beyond realism, though the same approach can make the narrative feel crowded.

How gory is Mandala Murders?
Expect explicit gore and mutilation, not merely a dark tone. Netflix labels the series “Gory,” and its episode descriptions refer to missing body parts. Those details make the content warning concrete: viewers sensitive to graphic injury or bodily horror may want to skip it, even if the occult premise appeals to them.
What is the series based on?
Mandala Murders is adapted from Mahendra Jakhar’s 2014 novel The Butcher of Benaras. Scroll reviewer Deepa Gahlot notes that the show changes the source novel’s premise, so the adaptation credit should not be taken to mean the series closely follows the book’s plot.

Who should watch it?
- Consider it if you like atmospheric investigations, occult or speculative mysteries, and stories willing to mix crime drama with ritual mythology.
- Approach with caution if graphic body horror is a deal-breaker or you prefer a mystery whose rules and explanations stay clear.
- Look elsewhere if you want a compact, grounded police procedural with a straightforward payoff.
Critical responses reflect that split. The Indian Express reviewer Shubhra Gupta rated the series 2.5 out of 5; that is her individual rating, not an aggregate score.
