The band flew on it during its 1973 and 1975 North American tours. The plane was grounded after corrosion was found, stored at Luton Airport, and dismantled for parts in 1982. It was not destroyed in a crash, and the reuse of its old registration does not mean the aircraft survives.
What was The Starship?
The Starship was a specific Boeing 720-022, construction number 17907, registered N7201U. It was the first Boeing 720 built. The aircraft’s story is reconstructed in a 2024 Led Zeppelin News investigation, which says it drew on FAA records, a 1973 brochure, tour itineraries, photographs and published accounts. The original flight logs were destroyed, so some details come from the investigation’s reconstruction rather than surviving logs.
The aircraft was not originally called The Starship. United Airlines operated it as a passenger jet, with names including “720 Jet Mainliner Walter T. Varney” and “720 Jet Mainliner Capt. F. M. Crismore.” The specialist history traces its first flight to November 23, 1959, and its sale to United to October 1, 1960.
How did a United jet become a touring plane?
Ward Sylvester pursued approval to operate the aircraft for band transport. The reconstructed timeline records approval on November 28, 1972, subject to limits on where and how much it could fly. Contemporary Entertainment Services arranged a substantial interior refit in 1973.

Inside the 1973 conversion
The passenger seating was removed and the cabin redesigned as a luxury charter space, with lounge seating, a bar and electric organ, television screens, and a bedroom. Interior designer David E. Bell described the project as a demanding custom installation in his retrospective account, reproduced alongside the aircraft history. His account offers insight into the design process, rather than serving as an engineering record.
Which musicians used The Starship?
Led Zeppelin chartered the aircraft for its 1973 and 1975 North American tours. Other reported users included Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Bob Dylan, The Band, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, Peter Frampton, The Moody Blues, Sonny and Cher, and Olivia Newton-John. The Starship was therefore a charter plane used by multiple performers, not a jet exclusively owned or used by Led Zeppelin.

Richard Cole, Led Zeppelin’s tour manager, later recalled how he first heard of it. In an account reproduced by Led Zeppelin News from his 1992 memoir, he said he contacted a tour operator who passed along a brochure about “a Boeing jet called the Starship.” The recollection appears in the history of the 1973 Starship brochure.
Why was the aircraft grounded?
Financial distress and wear had grounded the aircraft by 1977, though it later flew private and corporate charters. Its final chapter was driven by its deteriorating condition and the collapse of its charter business, not by a crash.

In 1979, former Aeroamerica chief flight engineer Gary Winstead recalled taking the plane to Luton for maintenance. He said mechanics found too much corrosion in the tail and elsewhere for it to be flown back to Boeing Field. That is Winstead’s retrospective account of the planned return flight, not a contemporaneous regulator’s finding.
When and how was The Starship dismantled?
The aircraft was stored outside at Luton and dismantled for parts in July 1982. The 2024 investigation says FAA records document an ownership transfer in June of that year before the dismantling; its timeline dates the work to July 13–17. No evidence in these accounts indicates the original aircraft was repaired and returned to service.

Does The Starship still exist under registration N7201U?
No: the original Boeing 720 had already been dismantled. Led Zeppelin News reported in 2024 that N7201U had been reserved again in 2018 for a different aircraft and was then not in use. A registration reservation is not the same thing as the survival or return to service of the original Starship, and its present status should not be inferred from that 2024 report.
The Starship is also not the Boeing 720 involved in Northwest Airlines Flight 705. The FAA’s account of that 1963 accident concerns aircraft N724US, a different plane: FAA Flight 705 history.
