In the Mahabharata, Krishna’s final earthly days come thirty-six years after the Kurukshetra war. The Yadavas destroy one another in a clash at Prabhasa; Krishna later enters yogic stillness in a forest and is wounded at the heel by a hunter named Jara, who mistakes him for an animal. Krishna comforts Jara before ascending to the divine realm. Arjuna then leads the survivors away from Dwaraka, which the sea floods after their departure.
What happened to Krishna after the Mahabharata war?
The account appears in the Mahabharata’s Mausala Parva, or Book 16. It places the events in the thirty-sixth year after the Great War. This is the epic’s religious narrative, not an account established as historical fact.

The Yadavas’ destruction at Prabhasa
The clan’s end is linked to two curses. After the war, Gandhari curses Krishna’s family to die through mutual destruction, blaming him for not preventing her sons’ deaths. Krishna accepts the curse and says the Yadavas cannot be destroyed by outside forces. Later, a curse by sages concerning Samba and an iron bolt comes to fruition. The Yadavas travel to Prabhasa, where intoxication and quarrels escalate into a mass fight in which they kill one another.
Krishna’s encounter with Jara
After Balarama leaves the human world, Krishna withdraws alone to the forest. He recalls the destruction and enters yoga. Jara, a hunter looking for deer, mistakes Krishna for prey and wounds him at the heel. This is not a battlefield duel: Krishna comforts the frightened hunter, and the Mahabharata narrates Krishna’s ascension to the divine realm, with the gods receiving him.

What happened to Dwaraka after Krishna left?
Daruka carries news of the events to the Pandavas. Arjuna travels to Dwaraka, grieves for Krishna’s household, and escorts the survivors away. In the epic, the sea floods the city after the people have departed. The journey is dangerous: raiders attack the procession, and Arjuna finds that his former strength has failed him.

The Bhagavata Purana gives Krishna’s departure a more explicitly devotional frame, describing him as entering his own abode. The Mahabharata’s account emphasizes the sequence of events, Krishna’s yogic departure, and his ascension. These are related tellings with different emphases; neither wording should be treated as the single formulation used by every Hindu tradition.
