In the Mahābhārata’s account of the Kurukṣetra war, Karṇa’s chariot wheel falls because of a Brahmin’s curse. The epic links that moment directly to Karṇa being struck down in battle. A separate curse involving his teacher Paraśurāma appears in some retellings, but it is not the curse named in the verse about the wheel.
What was the curse that affected Karṇa?
The decisive curse in this episode is attributed to a Brahmin. In the Gita Press rendering of the Mahābhārata, Sañjaya tells the king that Karṇa’s chariot begins to reel and falter because of the Brahmin’s curse. The chariot wheel then falls to the ground, and Karṇa is struck down in battle. The verse makes the link between the curse, the fallen wheel, and the battle’s fatal outcome explicit.
This account appears in the Karṇaparvan, the Mahābhārata’s book centered on Karṇa. In the verse rendering, the episode is identified as Mahābhārata 8.90.83. Read the Gita Press verse rendering at Vedapath.

For a child-friendly summary, it is accurate to say that the wheel curse comes true at the decisive moment. The scene is about a battle and ends with Karṇa’s death, so it is best told briefly rather than made more graphic.

What about the curse from Paraśurāma?
Some modern children’s retellings also tell of a separate curse connected with Paraśurāma: Karṇa will forget a weapon mantra when he needs it. That is a distinct story element from the Brahmin’s curse in the wheel-fall verse. The Gita Press verse cited above names the Brahmin’s curse as the cause of the chariot faltering; it does not recount both curses together.
Keep the two details separate when summarizing the story. A retelling may include both, but the account of the wheel falling should not be presented as if the verse itself also describes Karṇa forgetting a weapon mantra.

The Mahābhārata has multiple editions and retellings, so it is useful to say which source supports a detail. The wheel episode here is supported by a Gita Press verse rendering hosted by Vedapath. It is not the same edition as the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute’s (BORI) Critical Edition, whose electronic portal lists the Karṇaparvan.
BORI says its electronic Critical Edition text was considered in final form on June 14, 2026; the Roman-script Karṇaparvan file is marked last updated July 29, 2019. These dates describe the source files, not the date of the epic events. BORI’s Critical Edition portal and its Roman-script Karṇaparvan text provide the edition information and text.
