Former Belarusian hockey player Konstantin Koltsov died in Miami on March 18, 2024, aged 42. Police described his death as an apparent suicide and said foul play was not suspected. Aryna Sabalenka said afterward that they were no longer together and asked that their privacy, and his family’s privacy, be respected.
What happened to Konstantin Koltsov?
Koltsov died at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Miami. Bal Harbour Police and Fire Rescue were dispatched shortly after midnight on March 18, according to reports citing Miami-Dade police. Contemporary reports said he died after a fall from a hotel balcony.

Miami-Dade police characterized the death as an apparent suicide and said they did not suspect foul play. That was the police assessment reported at the time, not a medical finding. ABC News reported his death and age; the Miami Herald reported the police characterization; and RTÉ reported the dispatch time.
What did Aryna Sabalenka say?
In a statement issued March 20, 2024, Sabalenka clarified that she and Koltsov were no longer together when he died. She called his death an “unthinkable tragedy,” said her heart was broken, and requested privacy for herself and his family.

The statement was reproduced by the Miami Herald. Sabalenka made no further public disclosure in the statement about the circumstances of his death.

Who was Konstantin Koltsov?
Koltsov was a Belarusian former professional ice hockey player who later worked as a coach. He played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and represented Belarus at the 2002 and 2010 Olympic Games. His former club, Salavat Yulaev, confirmed his death. ESPN reported his hockey background and Sabalenka’s response.

Early reports described Koltsov as Sabalenka’s boyfriend or partner. In her own statement after his death, however, she said they were no longer together. Descriptions of Sabalenka as a two-time reigning Australian Open champion and as being in Miami for the Miami Open referred to the circumstances in March 2024, not to her current tennis status.
