Coverage of her interview with People says doctors first diagnosed muscle tension dysphonia, then later found that her left vocal cord was not meeting the right. She underwent surgery in August 2024, and her voice returned soon afterward.
What happened to Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s voice?
Williams-Paisley’s voice failed as she tried to welcome guests at an annual Alzheimer’s fundraiser she hosted with her sister, actress Ashley Williams. She initially thought she had strained it. Weeks later, it still had not returned beyond a whisper, according to TheWrap’s December 18, 2024 report and E! News’s December 18, 2024 report on her People interview.
The experience affected her emotionally and socially. TheWrap attributed the words “It was terrifying,” “I felt invisible,” and “I felt trapped in my own body” to Williams-Paisley. E! reported that she felt shame and withdrew from social occasions.
What diagnosis did doctors give her?
TheWrap and E! reported that doctors diagnosed Williams-Paisley with muscle tension dysphonia in 2023. E! says she sought care at Vanderbilt Voice Center early that year. After nearly a year working to relax her body and muscles, a follow-up examination identified a different issue: her left vocal cord was not meeting the right one.

These details describe Williams-Paisley’s reported care journey; they do not establish a diagnosis for anyone else with voice problems. The coverage describes the initial diagnosis and the later finding but does not provide enough clinical detail to assess how they related to one another.
What surgery did Kimberly Williams-Paisley have?
In August 2024, Williams-Paisley underwent surgery to move her left vocal cord closer to the right, according to E!’s account of the People interview. Her speaking voice returned almost immediately afterward. E! reported that she still could not yell and might sound raspy after a long day of talking.

What did she say about getting help?
In an April 21, 2025 interview with Fox News Digital, republished by The Bullet, Williams-Paisley offered personal advice: “The advice I would give is if something like that happens, don’t just keep drinking honey tea – actually go see a doctor.” That is her account-based advice, not a substitute for medical guidance.
