They signed with Hollywood Records and 19 Recordings, parted ways with the labels before releasing an album, put out independent music, returned to subway busking, and later performed on the show again. A December 2025 report said they were taking bookings for events and residency gigs. The claim that their net worth increased, however, is not supported by a reliable estimate or before-and-after figures.
How Just Sam won ‘American Idol’
Sam, whose name is Samantha Diaz, won the show’s 18th season in May 2020. The pandemic forced the finalists to perform remotely: Sam sang Andra Day’s “Rise Up” from quarantine, and the result was announced on May 17. ABC’s account of the finale describes the unusual circumstances of the win.

What happened after the win
They signed with Hollywood Records and 19 Recordings
On May 18, 2020, the day after the finale, Hollywood Records announced that Sam had signed an exclusive recording deal with the label and Industrial Media’s 19 Recordings. The announcement is available from Hollywood Records.
The deal ended before an album came out
The Washington Post reported in December 2023 that Sam and the labels parted ways less than a year after the win, before an album was released. Its account describes pandemic disruption and a slow start to studio work; those circumstances are reported context, not proof of a single cause for the split. The Washington Post’s report follows Sam’s career and the challenges that followed the show.

They released music independently
The Washington Post named “Change” and “Africando” among Sam’s songs available on streaming services at the time of its December 2023 article. In a 2022 Instagram Story quoted by Just Jared, Sam said mixing and mastering were costly, that they were writing and recording, and that they had spent money trying to claim songs recorded before leaving the label.
They returned to subway busking
The Washington Post reported that Sam posted subway performance videos in 2023 and described financial hardship, including difficulty covering rent and food, as a reason for returning to busking. That is a reported account of a difficult period, not a reliable measure of their total wealth.

They performed on ‘American Idol’ again
In April 2024, Sam returned to the show to sing Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.” The Washington Post noted that the appearance gave them the stage and confetti moment they had missed when the 2020 finale took place remotely.
What Just Sam was doing in late 2025
A December 9, 2025, report by TV Insider said Sam gave birth in September 2025 and was taking bookings for weddings, parties, galas, funerals, other events, and residency gigs, citing a social post dated November 15. Booking availability can change; this is a snapshot of what that report said at the time. TV Insider’s update provides the details.

Did Just Sam’s net worth increase?
There is no dependable, transparent net-worth estimate in the reporting cited here, and no sourced baseline to compare with a current figure. The headline claim that Sam’s net worth “increased” therefore cannot be verified.
The Washington Post mentioned a $250,000 contract amount for a recent American Idol winner, split into $125,000 at the win and $125,000 on album delivery. That figure was general contract context, not a verified account of what Sam received, their take-home pay, or their net worth. Financial hardship and work history alone cannot establish a person’s overall assets or debts.

An accessible syndicated summary credited to The Things and hosted by IMDb, dated May 3, 2024, mentions financial difficulty, “Africando,” and a more confident appearance, but does not enumerate seven developments or show a net-worth calculation. It also recounts fan speculation about Sam’s social-media references to the show; no confirmed motive for any deletion is established. The syndicated summary should not be treated as evidence for an increase in wealth.
Sam told The Washington Post in December 2023: “This is not the end of the story. That’s what I want people to know.” Their post-show career has included setbacks as well as new performances and music, but the available reporting does not justify turning that story into a net-worth claim.
