The legal outcomes matter: Fotis was charged but died before trial, while Michelle Troconis was convicted in 2024 of conspiracy to commit murder and related offenses.
What is Murder in the Dollhouse about?
Rich Cohen’s book follows Jennifer Dulos’s disappearance and the investigation into her presumed killing, while tracing the couple’s marriage, divorce, and custody conflict. Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux on May 20, 2025, it runs 352 pages, according to the Connecticut Post.
Cohen had covered the case before writing the book and attended Michelle Troconis’s 2024 trial, according to Connecticut Public. The book places the case in the context of the couple’s divorce and custody proceedings. That context helps explain the circumstances surrounding the investigation, but a contentious divorce is not proof of motive or guilt.
What happened to Jennifer Dulos?
- May 24, 2019: Jennifer dropped her children at school in New Canaan and disappeared. Her body has never been recovered.
- June 2019: Fotis Dulos and Michelle Troconis were arrested in connection with the investigation and faced allegations involving evidence tampering and hindering prosecution.
- January 7, 2020: Fotis was charged with murder, felony murder, and kidnapping. Troconis was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
- January 28, 2020: Fotis was found unresponsive after failing to appear in court and later died. His charges did not go to trial.
- 2024: Troconis was convicted and sentenced to 14.5 years in prison, according to the Crime Junkie case timeline.
What was alleged, and what was decided in court?
Investigators alleged that Fotis killed Jennifer and that Troconis helped conceal evidence. Those claims describe the investigative and prosecution theory; they are not a verdict against Fotis. He died before trial and was never convicted in the case.

Troconis, by contrast, was tried and convicted in 2024 of conspiracy to commit murder and related offenses. She received a 14.5-year sentence. The distinction is essential when summarizing the case: a charge is an allegation, while Troconis’s conviction is a court outcome.
How should readers assess the book’s account?
The book is a narrative account of a real case, but its individual scenes and interpretations should not be confused with court findings. The Connecticut Post reported that no members of Jennifer’s family spoke with Cohen for the book. It also reported that some of her friends said incidents described in the book may combine multiple events.

That reporting does not, by itself, disprove the book. It does mean readers should treat disputed or scene-specific details as the author’s account and distinguish them from independently established facts, charges, and trial outcomes. The Washington Post review describes the divorce proceedings as bitter and protracted; that is the reviewer’s characterization, not a judicial finding that the proceedings caused the crime.

Jennifer’s body has not been found. Fotis’s death before trial means the charges against him were not resolved by a verdict. The sources cited here do not establish the present status of every remaining charge or proceeding as of October 8, 2026, so they cannot support a definitive current account of all court activity.
