How Jay Mello was cast in Jaws
In a PEOPLE interview published June 20, 2025, and reproduced by AOL, Mello recalled that he was six when his mother took him and his older brothers to an open casting call. His brothers were the ones expected to audition, but Mello caught director Steven Spielberg’s attention. The account is Mello’s memory as told in the interview.

Mello played Sean Brody, the youngest son of Roy Scheider’s character, police chief Martin Brody. He recalled filming on Martha’s Vineyard in 1974.

Mello said the moment when Sean mimics his father was not in the script. In his recollection, Scheider noticed Mello copying him and brought it to Spielberg’s attention, leading to the moment being included. This is Mello’s account; the available sources do not independently corroborate how the scene was developed.

“I had a habit of copying people,” Mello said in the PEOPLE interview. He also recalled that, as a child, he did not get to watch the whole film in the theater: “I didn’t get to see the whole thing because my mom and dad kept ducking my head under the seats.”
Why he did not return for Jaws 2
The 2025 profile says Mello’s family decided he would not continue the role when the sequel was to be filmed in Florida. The follow-up account says he instead focused on having a normal childhood. The sources describe a family decision, not a later dispute or a confirmed reason beyond the filming plans and choice to step away.

What Mello did after the film
The PEOPLE profile reports that Mello stayed out of show business and later worked at a maple syrup company in Vermont. It also says he watches Jaws with his family each year around Christmastime. These details come from the 2025 interview and should not be read as confirmation of his current employment or where he lives.

The available reporting does not establish that Mello lives off the grid. A reported job at a Vermont maple syrup company does not show whether he lives in Vermont now, or whether he uses off-grid utilities or has an off-grid lifestyle. The interview supports a more limited account: he left acting behind and worked for a Vermont company at some point before the 2025 profile.
