What happened to Jay Leno?
Leno was walking from his hotel toward a restaurant before his scheduled performance when he took a route down a hill. The Los Angeles Times reported on November 19, 2024 that he opted for a shortcut and fell down the hill. In an interview covered by TMZ that day, Leno described the impact: “I rolled down the hill, hit my head on a rock, knocked me in the eye.”
Contemporary reports described facial bruising and an eye injury, along with a broken wrist and a lost nail. The reports do not establish a more specific medical diagnosis.
Why was Jay Leno wearing an eye patch?
Reports published on November 19, 2024, showed or described Leno wearing an eye patch after the fall and linked it to the reported eye injury. TV Insider’s coverage that day also described facial bruising. This explains the patch seen in coverage of the incident; it does not establish a current medical update.

How far did he fall, and did he perform?
The reported distance was an estimate, not a verified measurement. The Los Angeles Times characterized the fall as about 60 feet. The Independent quoted Leno estimating about 60–70 feet. The available coverage does not establish a surveyed distance.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Leno performed his scheduled show despite the fall. The Independent reported that he put off medical attention until after performing; that sequence is specific to the contemporary coverage.
