Hartley Sawyer was fired from The Flash in 2020 after past social-media posts resurfaced. Public acting-credit listings reviewed through October 8, 2026, show no later listed screen acting work, but they do not establish that he retired, stopped working, or permanently left Hollywood.
Why Hartley Sawyer was fired from The Flash
On June 8, 2020, Warner Bros. Television, The CW, Berlanti Productions, and executive producer Eric Wallace announced that Sawyer would not return for season 7. He had played Ralph Dibny, the Elongated Man, on the series. Contemporary reporting said the decision followed the resurfacing of old posts containing racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language. The companies said the posts were incompatible with their values and policies for a safe, inclusive, productive workforce; that was their stated rationale for the decision. TheWrap reported the announcement, and Entertainment Tonight covered the firing and apology.
The joint statement’s central line was: “Hartley Sawyer will not be returning for Season 7 of The Flash.” This was an announced dismissal, not a voluntary departure described by the employers.
What Sawyer said before the announcement
Sawyer posted an apology on Instagram on May 30, 2020, before the firing announcement. As reproduced in contemporaneous coverage, he apologized, acknowledged that his words had hurt people, and accepted responsibility. He also wrote, “I still have more work to do.” BeautifulBallad reproduced the apology. The apology preceded the decision; it did not reverse it or secure his return to the show.

What is known about his acting career afterward
IMDb’s credit listing and TV Guide’s credits page, checked October 8, 2026, both list The Flash as Sawyer’s latest screen acting work. No later acting credit surfaced in those listings. IMDb’s Hartley Sawyer page and TV Guide’s credits page describe public credits, not a complete employment history. They cannot establish whether he has private, uncredited, or other work, or whether he has retired.
What remains unknown
The available public record does not establish what Sawyer currently does, why he has maintained a lower public profile, or whether he plans to act again. No reliable first-person statement or well-sourced report in the sources cited here resolves those questions. Claims that he was blacklisted, chose to leave acting, or suffered a permanent career end would go beyond what the evidence shows.

Fan discussion about the firing continues, but discussion threads and news aggregation results do not confirm a person’s current work or intentions.
