Wade Wilson’s face is disfigured by the experimental treatment he undergoes at the Workshop while seeking a cure for cancer. It may look burned, but makeup designer Bill Corso said Wade is not a burn victim: the film attributes his appearance to the experiment, without specifying a real-world medical mechanism. Why is Deadpool’s face scarred?
In the 2016 film, Wade Wilson is diagnosed with cancer and submits to an experimental treatment at the Workshop in hopes of being cured. The film’s production notes describe his “mutilated visage” as the result of those experiments. They establish the fictional cause as the Workshop procedure, but do not explain it through a specific medical process. The film’s production notes provide the story context.
Was Deadpool burned?
No conventional burn injury is established as the explanation. The makeup designer for the film, Bill Corso, drew a distinction between the character’s appearance and a burn victim: “he’s not really burned, he’s not a burn victim, he’s a guy who’s been disfigured by this.” The quoted clarification comes from a JoBlo set-visit interview with Corso.
How was the scarred look created?
Reynolds wore practical silicone prosthetics; the disfigurement was makeup, not a real injury. For the first film, Corso’s makeup department worked with Creative Character Engineering, tested multiple designs, and developed thin, translucent appliances meant to suggest muscle, blood, and tissue beneath the skin. Corso said Reynolds wore ten thin silicone appliances on his head. The production notes for Deadpool describe the design and application.

Did the makeup change for Deadpool 2?
The team revised the design and application for the sequel; that production change did not alter the original story explanation for Wade’s disfigurement.
