Cereplast announced a partnership with Oculus3D to offer bioplastic cinema 3D glasses, and a U.S. summer 2010 distribution was reported as a plan. The available evidence confirms the announcement—not that the glasses reached theaters. Claims about composting and emissions were attributed to Cereplast, not independently verified.
What Cereplast announced
In its SEC-filed first-quarter 2010 results, Cereplast listed this company highlight: “Teamed with Oculus3D to offer first bioplastic 3D eyewear.” The filing confirms that Cereplast reported a partnership, but gives no production total or record of where the glasses were used. Cereplast’s Q1 2010 filing
At the time, Cereplast was described as the resin maker and Oculus3D as a company focused on film-based 3D projection technology. A March 31, 2010 report said U.S. distribution was expected that summer. An earlier report, published March 17, described plant-based PLA eyewear intended for deployment as early as summer, while noting that the cinemas had not been identified. Those reports document expectations, not a completed rollout. The Independent/Relaxnews, March 31, 2010; Engadget, March 17, 2010
Did the glasses reach theaters?
The available sources do not establish whether the planned distribution happened. They do not document a cinema deployment, its scale, participating venues, or a later retail product. The defensible conclusion is that Cereplast announced the partnership and contemporary coverage reported a summer 2010 distribution target; a theater launch remains unconfirmed.

What was claimed about composting and emissions
The Independent/Relaxnews report relayed Cereplast’s claim that the glasses, if discarded at a compost site, would break down in under 180 days without chemical residues or soil toxicity. The reviewed sources do not include a test report, certification record, or independent lifecycle assessment for the finished glasses. Treat the decomposition period and safety statements as company claims, not established product performance.
The report also attributed two figures to a Cereplast press release: more than 10 million pairs of glasses for each of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, and an emissions comparison to burning 50,000 gallons of gasoline or 917 barrels of oil. These are attributed figures, not independently validated lifecycle results for the Cereplast glasses. The Independent/Relaxnews, March 31, 2010

How cinema eyewear was handled at the time
Compostability was not the only possible end-of-use route. A contemporary Guardian report described cinema glasses being cleaned and repackaged for reuse, and a cinema operator recycling damaged pairs. That period context does not demonstrate Cereplast product performance or prove a universal industry practice. The Guardian, May 10, 2010
For cinema operators, collection and reuse, recycling damaged eyewear, and composting are distinct options. Composting would depend on suitable infrastructure and substantiated claims for the specific product; the 2010 announcement alone does not establish that those conditions were met.
