A 3D reconstruction of Julius Caesar presented in 2018 offers a less idealized answer to “what did Julius Caesar look like?” Its uneven features and receding hairline differ from the polished, full-haired image many people recognize—but it is an interpretation of ancient portraits, not a recovered likeness beyond doubt.
What is the Julius Caesar face reconstruction?
Physical anthropologist Maja d’Hollosy made the reconstruction with archaeologist Tom Buijtendorp. Leiden’s National Museum of Antiquities presented it in June 2018 as a new way to visualize Caesar’s face. The museum described it as a more credible alternative to familiar depictions, while explicitly cautioning that it is not “an absolute truth.” Rijksmuseum van Oudheden: “A new look at Julius Caesar”
What evidence shaped the reconstructed face?
The main source was a Caesar portrait in the Leiden museum’s collection. D’Hollosy and Buijtendorp supplemented it with features from the Tusculum portrait and a portrait on a contemporary coin. These objects provide visual evidence to interpret; they do not amount to a complete record of Caesar’s appearance.
The reconstruction shows an asymmetrical skull shape and a receding hairline. Those features help explain why this Julius Caesar face reconstruction looks less conventionally heroic than depictions with a symmetrical face and abundant hair. The museum’s account also says some details, including the eyes, remain uncertain.

Why do ancient portraits of Caesar look different?
Portraits can reflect artistic choices as well as attempts at resemblance. A useful comparison is the Chiaramonti Caesar in the Vatican Museums. Its catalog dates it probably to 30–20 BCE—after Caesar’s death—and says its determined features rely on idealized traits. That is evidence about this particular portrait, not proof that every ancient image of Caesar was idealized in the same way. Vatican Museums: “Julius Caesar”
The Leiden reconstruction’s less polished appearance is therefore best understood as a different interpretation of portrait evidence, rather than a definitive correction of every earlier image. Buijtendorp called it a “more credible alternative” while also acknowledging that it could not represent an absolute truth.

What can the reconstruction tell us about Caesar’s birth?
Buijtendorp interprets the skull’s appearance as bearing signs of a difficult birth. That is his interpretation of the portrait evidence, not an independently established diagnosis. The reconstruction does not, by itself, prove how Caesar was born or explain the cause of the skull’s asymmetry.

It is a reasoned visualization based on a primary Leiden portrait and two supplementary sources, not a photograph or a uniquely verifiable face. The museum itself highlights the uncertainty, especially around details such as the eyes. The most defensible takeaway is that the reconstruction presents a plausible, less idealized alternative to familiar images—not the final word on Caesar’s appearance.
