CeeLo Green left The Voice’s regular coaching panel after season five. In February 2014, he said he would not return; later that year, he described the role as tiring and said he felt he had run his course. His departure also coincided with a criminal case that ended in a no-contest plea to a felony drug charge. Green continued working in music and entertainment, and appeared in a limited guest role connected to the show in 2026—not as one of its season 30 coaches.
When did CeeLo Green leave The Voice?
Green was one of the show’s original coaches. He coached seasons one through three, sat out season four alongside Christina Aguilera, then returned for season five. That was his last season as a regular coach in that run. CBS News reported that on February 19, 2014, he told Ellen DeGeneres, “I’m not coming back at all.”

His announcement came while he was discussing new music and other possible work with NBC. The statement was clear about his decision not to return, but it did not explain every factor behind the show’s or network’s plans.
Why did CeeLo Green say he left?
In a July 2014 interview, Green said leaving was his choice and characterized the split as amicable. He told Us Weekly, as quoted in ABC News’s report, that the show “easily and quickly became a job.” He also described it as “Very, very obligating… Taxing and tiring” and said he thought he had “run my course there just naturally.”

What happened in the criminal case?
The legal case was a separate but significant part of the period around his departure. In August 2014, Green pleaded no contest to one felony count of furnishing ecstasy to a woman during a 2012 dinner in Los Angeles. The Associated Press reported that he received three years of formal probation and 45 days of community service, along with counseling requirements. The same report said prosecutors rejected a rape charge when they brought the felony drug charge; Green was not convicted of rape. CBS News’s AP report details the plea and sentence.

What did CeeLo Green do after The Voice?
Green continued his music and entertainment work rather than disappearing from public life. His official website presents music and acting activity and includes music and tour sections. The site also states that he has won five Grammy Awards; that figure is his own biographical claim.

In 2026, Green’s official site announced a special guest-judge appearance connected to The Voice. That limited participation was distinct from becoming a regular coach again. NBCUniversal’s September 2026 season 30 announcement named Queen Latifah, Riley Green, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine as coaches. It also included Green among the show’s original coaches in a retrospective special.

No. The 2026 guest-judge appearance was a special role, while NBCUniversal’s announced season 30 coaching panel consisted of Queen Latifah, Riley Green, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine. Green’s place in a retrospective as an original coach recognizes his earlier role, not a return to the regular panel.
