PEOPLE reported on February 28, 2026, that an unnamed source said, “The family has it.” The family member who holds it and its present location have not been disclosed.
What is known about the ring’s fate
PEOPLE’s February 28, 2026 report is the latest direct account of the ring’s whereabouts: it says the ring was recovered after the crash and returned to Bessette-Kennedy’s family. The custody claim rests on an unnamed source, not a named family member speaking on the record. The report does not say where the ring is kept.
That account is more specific than an earlier report from The Knot, which said the rings’ fate had not been publicly addressed. The newer report supports saying the engagement ring is with her family, but not identifying its custodian or precise location.
What the engagement ring looked like
PEOPLE described the ring as a platinum eternity band set with alternating oval-shaped diamonds and sapphires. Vogue also described it as a diamond-and-sapphire eternity band. It was a continuous band rather than the prominent solitaire often associated with celebrity engagement rings.

How the ring was connected to Jackie Kennedy Onassis
The design reportedly took inspiration from a ring worn by John F. Kennedy Jr.’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, known as her “swimming ring.” Bessette-Kennedy’s friend Carole Radziwill wrote that the engagement ring was a copy of a ring John’s mother wore. Vogue makes an important distinction: Kennedy did not propose with Jackie’s actual ring.
The precise identity of Jackie’s “swimming ring” is not settled. Vogue quoted jewelry historian Marion Fasel saying, “I can’t say with certainty which ring was Jackie’s swimming ring.” It is therefore safest to describe the engagement ring as inspired by Jackie’s jewelry, not as a family heirloom passed directly to Bessette-Kennedy.

The proposal and the couple’s wedding bands
Vogue reported that Kennedy proposed during a fishing trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. His former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio recalled that he spoke about how life was better with a partner before telling Bessette-Kennedy, “I want you to be my partner.”
The engagement ring was separate from the couple’s wedding rings. PEOPLE reported that they married on September 21, 1996, and wore simple gold wedding bands designed by Gogo Ferguson. PEOPLE also said it is unclear whether Bessette-Kennedy wore the engagement ring or her wedding band when the plane crashed.

What the crash reporting does—and does not—establish
PEOPLE reported that the plane crashed on July 16, 1999, and that the victims’ bodies were recovered five days later at a reported depth of 116 feet. The reported recovery of the engagement ring does not establish that Bessette-Kennedy was wearing it when the crash occurred. The available account does not identify which ring, if either, she had on.
