After a serious 2016 arrest, he reached a plea agreement that kept him out of jail. He later remained connected to the History series, underwent gastric-sleeve surgery, opened a candy business in Las Vegas, and co-hosted the Pawn After Dark podcast with Rick Harrison.
The 2016 arrest changed the public story around Chumlee
On March 9, 2016, Las Vegas police searched Russell’s home while investigating a sexual-assault allegation. Officers reported finding firearms, marijuana, methamphetamine and prescription medication. The sexual-assault investigation did not lead to sexual-assault charges against Russell.
The first headlines made the case sound larger than its eventual outcome. Russell was initially reported to be facing numerous charges, but the case was resolved through a plea agreement. On May 25, 2016, he pleaded guilty to one felony count involving unlawful possession of a firearm and one gross-misdemeanor count involving attempted drug possession.
The agreement required three years of probation and counseling. If Russell completed the terms, the felony charge could be dismissed. He avoided jail time. That is why claims that he is serving a life sentence, or that he spent years in prison, are false.

Did Chumlee leave Pawn Stars?
There is no evidence that the arrest permanently removed Russell from the program. HISTORY continued to identify him as part of the Pawn Stars cast, describing him as Corey Harrison’s childhood friend and a longtime presence at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas.
Russell also appeared in later Pawn Stars programming, including the travel-based spin-off Pawn Stars Do America. His role has always been different from that of Rick Harrison, who handles much of the business negotiation, or the late Richard “The Old Man” Harrison, whose authority shaped the original shop dynamic. Chumlee became one of the show’s recognizable personalities because of his humor, enthusiasm for unusual objects and long-standing relationship with Corey.
The original series entered a period of uncertainty after its latest reported original episodes aired in September 2024. In February 2025, Rick Harrison said the show was no longer under contract with HISTORY at that time. A later Las Vegas Review-Journal report described a possible return with new episodes in 2027 featuring Rick Harrison and Chumlee. That was a reported future plan, not proof that those episodes had already aired.

His major weight-loss transformation
Russell’s appearance changed substantially over the years, leading to recurring online speculation about how he lost weight. In 2014, he said he had dropped roughly 100 pounds, moving from about 320 pounds to approximately 225 through diet and exercise.
That was not the end of the story. After experiencing significant weight fluctuations, Russell underwent gastric-sleeve surgery in 2018. He later said he lost about 160 pounds after the procedure, alongside changes to his diet and activity. Describing the transformation as the result of dieting alone leaves out the surgery he publicly discussed.
A gastric sleeve procedure reduces the size of the stomach, but it is not an instant or independent explanation for every subsequent change. Russell attributed his results to the operation together with lifestyle changes. His transformation became one of the most visible parts of his post-arrest public image.

What Chumlee has done outside the show
Russell expanded beyond television with a retail business in Las Vegas. He opened Chumlee’s Candy on the Boulevard at Pawn Plaza, beside the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop. The reported address is 725 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas.
The candy shop fit the lighthearted persona viewers knew from Pawn Stars, while also giving Russell a business connected to the tourist traffic around the pawn shop. It was not a sign that he had abandoned the television series; it was one of several projects associated with his public profile.
In 2025, Russell and Rick Harrison launched the Pawn After Dark podcast. Apple Podcasts describes it as a behind-the-scenes program recorded around the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop. Its 2025 listing includes episodes featuring the two Pawn Stars personalities discussing the shop, filming and their experiences in the business.

|---|---|
| Chumlee is in prison or serving life | False. His 2016 plea agreement required probation and counseling, and he avoided jail. |
| He was charged with sexual assault | Misleading. The search was connected to a sexual-assault investigation, but the reported charges concerned weapons and drugs. |
| He was convicted of 20 felonies | False. The case ended with a plea involving one felony weapon charge and one gross misdemeanor drug-related charge. |
| He left Pawn Stars after the arrest | Unsupported. HISTORY continued to list him as cast, and he appeared in later related programming. |
| Pawn Stars was permanently canceled | Not established. The show went through a contract hiatus, while a 2025 report described a planned 2027 return. |
So, what happened to Chumlee?
Chumlee’s career survived the 2016 legal case. He completed a plea arrangement designed to keep him out of jail, remained associated with Pawn Stars, and continued building a public identity through business and podcasting. His dramatic weight loss also changed how audiences perceived him, but it was tied to gastric-sleeve surgery as well as diet and exercise.
The simplest explanation for the rumors is that several separate stories—his arrest, the show’s later hiatus, and his changing appearance—were repeatedly blended together online. Taken separately, the record is clearer: Russell faced a serious legal case, avoided incarceration, stayed connected to the franchise and continued working in Las Vegas entertainment and retail.
