From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a 2025 action thriller built inside the mythology of the John Wick films. It follows Eve Macarro, an assassin trained by the Ruska Roma, as she pursues those responsible for her father’s death. Ana de Armas leads the film, while Keanu Reeves appears as John Wick in a story that runs parallel to John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
Despite its title, this is not a ballet documentary or a conventional dance film. “Ballerina” describes Eve’s training and role within the Ruska Roma’s assassin tradition.

What is Ballerina about?
Eve Macarro is brought into the Ruska Roma, the organization that also trained John Wick, and is taught to combine dance-based movement with firearms, knives and hand-to-hand combat. After her father is killed, Eve turns that training toward revenge.
The film places her inside the same hidden society governed by the High Table. That means familiar rules, coins, contracts, hotels and codes of conduct return, but the central viewpoint belongs to Eve rather than John. Her mission takes her through a world where nearly every favor creates a debt and every act of violence can trigger a larger response.
#1 Best Overall
- Good product with good quality
- Easy to use
- Value for money
The story is set during the period covered by John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. It is therefore a side story within the established timeline, not a sequel that takes place after John Wick: Chapter 4.

De Armas carries the film as Eve, while Huston, McShane, Reeves and the returning franchise performers connect the spin-off to the established John Wick world. Reeves’ appearance is substantial enough to matter to the mythology, but the film remains Eve’s story rather than a disguised fifth John Wick chapter.
Who directed it?
Len Wiseman directed Ballerina from a screenplay by Shay Hatten. Hatten had already written within the franchise, and the production was mounted by Lionsgate, Thunder Road Films and 87eleven/87North.
The film’s production attracted attention because Chad Stahelski, director of the main John Wick films, became involved with additional action work. That involvement has often been simplified into the claim that Stahelski replaced Wiseman or reshot the entire movie. Wiseman remained the credited director. The more accurate description is that Stahelski worked with the production on added action material rather than taking over the film wholesale.

At 2 hours and 4 minutes, the film gives its set pieces considerable room to develop. Reviews commonly singled out Ana de Armas’s physical commitment and the elaborate fights, shootouts and improvised weapons that define the franchise. The action uses Eve’s movement and training as part of her character, rather than treating her “ballerina” identity as a decorative label.
The reservations were different. Some critics found the running time excessive or the narrative uneven, while others felt that the film depends heavily on established John Wick mythology. Viewers unfamiliar with the High Table, the Continental or the Ruska Roma may understand the revenge plot but miss some of the significance attached to its organizations and rituals.
The film was released in the United States on June 6, 2025, after its originally announced June 7, 2024 date was moved. It carries an R rating for strong and bloody violence throughout, as well as language.
Box office and reception
With a reported production budget of about $90 million, Ballerina earned approximately $137.2 million worldwide, including roughly $58.1 million in North America. Rotten Tomatoes has listed the film at around 75–76% from critics, although aggregate scores can change as databases update.
Those figures describe a recognizable franchise entry with a generally positive critical response, particularly toward its lead performance and action design, but not a release on the scale of the mainline series. Its appeal is clearest for viewers who want another story from the assassin underworld and are willing to accept a film that expands existing lore rather than starting from zero.

In the United States, the film is available through digital rental and purchase stores, including Apple TV and other major video-on-demand platforms. Subscription availability changes by territory and date, so a current local listing is more reliable than a permanent platform claim. JustWatch can be used to check which services currently carry it in a particular country.
When searching, use the full marketed title, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. This avoids confusing it with Ballerina Assassin, a separate 2025 film from The Asylum with a different cast, director and runtime.
Where it fits in the John Wick timeline
- John Wick
- John Wick: Chapter 2
- John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
- Ballerina, whose events take place during the period of Parabellum
- John Wick: Chapter 4
This is a practical viewing order, although watching Ballerina after the first three films gives its returning characters and institutions more context. It should not be filed simply as a post-Chapter 4 sequel.

Ballerina works as a female-led expansion of the John Wick universe rather than a replacement for the main series. Ana de Armas supplies the film’s center of gravity, and the action delivers the elaborate choreography fans expect. Its parallel timeline, dense franchise lore and long runtime make it a better fit for existing John Wick viewers than for anyone looking for a self-contained introduction to the world.
