What first appears to be suicide is revealed as a death Tommy caused during a drunken struggle—and Tommy’s guilt helps explain why he has withdrawn from the world.
How did Arthur Shelby die?
The film initially presents Arthur’s death as an apparent suicide on a bridge. That account changes during a séance, when Kaulo, claiming to channel her dead twin Zelda, tells Tommy: “Everyone believes Arthur Shelby took his own life on the bridge. He wasn’t by himself, was he? You were there with him.” Netflix’s ending explainer confirms the implication: Tommy killed Arthur in a drunken struggle after Arthur stole his car.

Tommy insists the killing was an accident. The film’s flashbacks depict the struggle without clearly showing Arthur’s face, according to Netflix’s explainer. The apparent suicide, then, is the story others believe; Tommy’s presence and responsibility are the truth the film reveals.
Why is Arthur’s death important to Tommy?
The main story takes place in Birmingham in 1940, during World War II. Tommy has retreated from family and public life. Netflix’s official synopsis describes him returning from self-imposed exile to confront his demons and decide what to do with his legacy.
#1 Best Overall
Arthur’s death gives Tommy’s isolation a specific source: grief compounded by guilt over killing his brother. Creator and writer Steven Knight told Netflix that the idea came to him while writing Tommy’s intense guilt: “Sometimes something occurs to you that explains what you’ve been writing.” Knight said the guilt also gives Tommy a reason to seek redemption through a final act of service. TVLine’s March 23, 2026 report also summarizes Knight’s explanation.
