Spoilers for WandaVision and the full Agatha All Along series. “Agnes” was never a separate person: she was Agatha Harkness’s Westview identity. After Wanda defeated Agatha in the WandaVision finale, Wanda took her magic and enchanted her to believe she was Agnes. Agatha All Along begins with her still trapped in that spell, then follows her escape and a quest that ends with her becoming a ghostly mentor to Billy.
Why Agatha was living as Agnes
Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, posed as Wanda and Vision’s neighbor in Westview. She knew the town was enchanted and manipulated events to study Wanda’s reality-altering power. Agatha ultimately tried to take that power for herself. The Los Angeles Times’ recap of WandaVision describes how Agatha’s neighbor persona concealed her purpose.

What Wanda did to Agatha in the WandaVision finale
Wanda defeats Agatha and takes her magic. She then casts a spell that makes Agatha believe she is Agnes, leaving her in Westview as the nosy neighbor. The identity persists after the confrontation because of Wanda’s enchantment—not because Agatha simply chooses to keep using her disguise. The Los Angeles Times’ recap recounts the defeat and spell.
How Agatha gets out of Wanda’s spell
Marvel’s series synopsis describes Agatha as powerless and trapped in a distorted spell until a suspicious goth Teen frees her. The Teen asks her to take him on the Witches’ Road, prompting Agatha to gather a coven for the journey. Disney’s production article outlines that setup.

What the Witches’ Road and finale reveal
The series initially frames the Road as the goal of Agatha and the coven’s journey. The finale reveals that Billy’s magic created it. After a confrontation with Death, Billy transfers some of his magic to Agatha. Agatha later sacrifices herself to save him and remains with him as a ghostly mentor, rather than returning to life as Agnes. The Washington Post’s finale recap describes the revelations and Agatha’s fate.
How the creators describe the series
In a September 17, 2024 Walt Disney Company interview, showrunner and executive producer Jac Schaeffer called the series “a puzzle-box show” with “lots of mysteries, lots of reveals, lots of unexpected moments.” Schaeffer also described its approach as darker and more horror-focused than a typical MCU story. Hahn, who plays Agatha, reflected that learning she could not regain power alone was “the hardest lesson for this witch.”

Is the Witches’ Road story connected to the comics?
There is a related Scarlet Witch comics story, but it is not the explanation for the television plot. The Los Angeles Times notes that Agatha accompanies Wanda on the Witches’ Road in a Scarlet Witch comic series published from 2015 to 2017. That is a separate continuity; the show’s finale attributes its Road to Billy’s magic. The comic connection is optional background, not something viewers need to understand Agatha’s story.
