On November 18, 1978, members of Peoples Temple killed U.S. Representative Leo Ryan and four others at Port Kaituma airstrip. At Jonestown, Jim Jones called for collective death, and residents died after ingesting a poisoned drink or being injected. The Jonestown & Peoples Temple Digital Archive counts 918 deaths across three locations that day; the presence of children and uncertainty about coercion mean it is misleading to describe every death as a freely chosen suicide.
What happened before the airstrip attack?
Ryan traveled to Guyana with a party that included relatives of Peoples Temple members, lawyers, journalists and an Embassy escort. The group left Georgetown on November 17 and visited Jonestown the following day. Ryan was investigating reports about Temple members and whether people living at the settlement were free to leave.
A U.S. Embassy account says residents privately asked to leave, followed by a larger group that departed with Ryan on November 18. During the visit, a Temple member attacked Ryan with a knife; the report says he was not injured. As the party prepared to leave from the Port Kaituma airstrip, Temple members opened fire on the aircraft and people on the runway.
In a November 30, 1978 telegram, Deputy Chief of Mission Richard A. Dwyer recalled: “I noted that Mr. Jones and legal counsel had assured the Congressman, the newsmen and myself that anyone who wished to leave with us was free to leave Jonestown.” The statement records what Dwyer said he had observed and been assured; it does not establish what choices were available to every resident.

How many people died, and where?
The Jonestown & Peoples Temple Digital Archive gives a total of 918 related deaths in Guyana on November 18, 1978. Its count covers the settlement, the airstrip and Georgetown—not Jonestown alone.
| Location | Deaths | What the count refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Jonestown | 909 | People who died at the settlement. |
| Port Kaituma airstrip | 5 | Ryan, three journalists and Peoples Temple defector Patricia Parks, killed as the party prepared to leave. |
| Georgetown | 4 | Additional related deaths at the Temple’s headquarters. |
| Total | 918 | The archive’s combined count for the three locations. |
The archive says 304 children and minors under 18 are included in the total. It cautions that no official government-generated catalog of everyone who died exists, so its figure should be understood as a specialist archive’s count rather than an official government casualty register.

How did people die, and did everyone choose to die?
The deaths at Jonestown followed Jones’s call for collective death. The archive describes people ingesting a poisoned mixture or being injected. The substance was mixed with Flavor Aid, not Kool-Aid. These details describe documented methods; they do not show that every person had the same experience or made the same decision.
Calling the tragedy a mass murder-suicide can convey its complexity better than calling it a voluntary mass suicide. Children could not meaningfully consent to suicide, and the available evidence does not establish that every adult acted freely. The degree of coercion in individual cases remains uncertain. The archive also notes that only seven autopsies were performed, limiting what can be established about individual deaths.

What happened after the killings?
The FBI investigated Ryan’s murder and supported work connected to the mass casualties. Its public case history says Larry Layton was extradited, convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Layton was the only Temple member tried in the United States for criminal acts at Jonestown.

The archive says the FBI organized thousands of pages recovered from Jonestown and the Temple’s Georgetown headquarters into 118 sections. The records include financial reports, medical records, minutes, letters, diaries and membership cards. It also describes about 1,000 recovered tapes: 613 were reviewed and categorized, while about 400 were blank or contained only music. Those materials can help viewers assess how an account is built—whether it distinguishes the locations and kinds of deaths, explains what its casualty count includes and treats uncertainty about coercion carefully.
