What Happened, Brittany Murphy? is a two-part 2021 documentary directed by Cynthia Hill. Its eight headline revelations revisit Murphy’s health and career and focus heavily on allegations and accounts about her husband, Simon Monjack. They are not eight independently verified findings: the series does not establish that Murphy was poisoned or murdered, and it does not resolve the unanswered questions around her death.
What is What Happened, Brittany Murphy??
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the Max Original documentary series for October 14, 2021, describing it as a portrait of Murphy and the circumstances surrounding her death at 32. Apple TV’s catalog lists two episodes directed by Cynthia Hill: the first follows Murphy’s rise and death; the second examines Monjack’s past and relationship with her.
Murphy made her film debut as Tai in Clueless. The documentary places her career alongside scrutiny of her appearance and the pressures faced by young actors. TIME’s review quotes Murphy’s first agent, Chris Snyder, reflecting on how childhood performers can miss ordinary experiences that help people judge others: “You don’t become as aware of people and what they can do—and the petty stuff that people can do, or lies.”
What are the eight reported “bombshells”?
Rolling Stone’s 2021 account numbers eight revelations associated with the documentary. The distinction matters: several are interviewees’ recollections, allegations, or interpretations, rather than conclusions established by public records. The figures and stories below should be understood in that context.

1. Weight loss and anemia
The film connects Murphy’s extreme weight loss with her later anemia and recounts that people close to her linked weight changes to criticism of her appearance. Rolling Stone quotes the coroner interviewed in the documentary: “To develop an anemia of this nature, she was not eating.” That comment does not, by itself, establish a complete medical explanation for her anemia.
2. Sharon Murphy and Monjack’s reported closeness
People quoted in the film reportedly said that Murphy’s mother, Sharon, and Monjack slept in the same bed while grieving after Murphy’s death. The documentary also showed photographs and public appearances that some viewers interpreted as unusually intimate. Those accounts and interpretations are not proof of a romantic relationship.

3. Two children Monjack reportedly had with other women
The documentary introduced accounts about a daughter, Jasmine, and a son, Elijah, whom Murphy reportedly did not know about. Elizabeth Ragsdale, identified as Elijah’s mother, described her relationship with Monjack and said she believed his later offer to buy her a house was intended to silence her. This is Ragsdale’s account as presented in the film, not an independently established motive.
4. Stories about cancer, wealth, and celebrity relationships
Interviewees described Monjack claiming to have terminal cancer and later recovering through shark-cartilage treatment. They also recounted claims he made about wealth, art, cars, and relationships with celebrities. His mother, Linda Monjack, offered a different interpretation in the documentary: she said she thought he believed his own cancer story.

6. Alleged control over Murphy’s life and career

7. Reported drug use and prescription bottles
Rolling Stone’s summary says the documentary recounted interviewees’ memories of substance use and quoted the coroner as saying he found 90 prescription bottles at Monjack’s bedside. That count is reported by Rolling Stone as the coroner’s statement in its 2021 summary; the reviewed material does not establish the contents, ownership, or medical significance of every bottle.
8. Perez Hilton’s reported prediction
Rolling Stone says Hilton told the filmmakers he had predicted on a radio station in 2009 that Murphy would be the celebrity who died the following year. How did Brittany Murphy die?
Murphy’s official cause of death was pneumonia, with severe anemia and multiple prescription and over-the-counter drugs reported as contributing factors, according to accounts of the death certificate in TIME and The Guardian and the Washington Post’s review. The drug contribution should not be reduced to a claim that an overdose alone caused her death.
The Washington Post says the documentary’s hints about poisoning and murder lead nowhere and that the film offers no definitive new answer. The Guardian likewise criticizes its amateur-sleuth approach and self-serving speculation. The reviews report no proof that Murphy was poisoned, murdered, or killed by mold; theories raised in the film or online are not findings by investigators.
Do the documentary’s revelations solve the case?
No. The Washington Post’s critical view is that the major new details mostly concern Monjack and that innuendo obscures rather than resolves the circumstances of Murphy’s death. The Guardian criticizes the reconstructions and use of fan theories. TIME sees value in the film’s account of media scrutiny and pressure on young actors, while also noting its focus on Monjack. These are reviewers’ assessments, not neutral transcripts, but they underline why the eight stories should not be mistaken for a solved case.
To assess any claim raised in the documentary, ask whether it is an official finding or an interviewee’s allegation, whether an underlying primary record is available, whether a named firsthand source supports it, and whether the film or a reviewer is speculating. On the central question of cause of death, the official account reported by the reviews is pneumonia with contributing factors—not a finding of foul play.
