Roseanne Barr and Sara Gilbert were collaborators on the 2018 Roseanne revival before Gilbert publicly condemned Barr’s comments about Valerie Jarrett and supported ABC’s decision to cancel the show. ABC News reported that a 2017 sketch on The Talk, featuring Gilbert and John Goodman, helped spark the revival. Gilbert made calls and sent texts to bring cast members on board, then helped secure a deal with ABC. Barr praised her organizing work: “Sara Gilbert, she’s on fire,” she said in February 2018. The Television Academy also described Gilbert’s producer role and her desire to protect the show’s working-class perspective.
In a May 2018 Vanity Fair profile, Barr credited Gilbert with knowing how to communicate with her and with the people around the production. Gilbert, in turn, recalled looking up to Barr as a child, describing her as a strong woman who made her own choices. Their public comments before the cancellation reflected admiration and a working partnership, not a documented account of every aspect of their private relationship.

Why did Sara Gilbert support canceling Roseanne?
On May 29, 2018, ABC canceled the revival after Barr posted a tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said the statement was “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values” and announced the cancellation.
Gilbert responded publicly on June 4. She called Barr’s comments “abhorrent,” said she was disappointed in Barr’s actions, and stood behind ABC’s decision. She also stressed that the cancellation affected workers: “I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process,” she said, while expressing pride in the show and its themes of diversity, love and inclusion. Her statement makes clear that supporting the network’s decision did not mean ignoring the consequences for the cast and crew.

What changed after ABC canceled the revival?
ABC later approved The Conners, continuing the family story without Barr. CBS reported that Barr relinquished her creative and financial ties to the spinoff. Gilbert described moving ahead without the fictional family’s matriarch as emotional, while explaining why the cast wanted to keep telling the Conners’ story.
The change is clear in the professional record: Gilbert had helped assemble the revival and produce it; after Barr’s comments and the cancellation, she publicly supported ending that version of the show and continued with a spinoff that excluded Barr. Those production decisions establish a break in their working relationship. They do not, by themselves, prove the details of an ongoing personal feud.

What is known—and not known—about their relationship now
The sources document a positive collaboration and mutual public respect before the cancellation, followed by Gilbert’s public criticism of Barr’s comments and support for ABC’s response. They do not establish whether the two later reconciled, confronted one another privately, or how they currently regard each other. It is therefore more accurate to describe a public professional rupture than to present an ongoing personal feud as settled fact.
Nor was Barr’s entire career canceled: ABC canceled the Roseanne revival. The evidence here supports that specific consequence, not a claim that her broader career ended.
