When did Madelaine Petsch and Travis Mills break up?
News of the breakup was reported on February 19, 2020, with Mills confirming it on Instagram on February 20. Reports described their relationship as lasting about three years, an approximate duration rather than an exact dating timeline. E! News reported the split; Teen Vogue reproduced Mills’s statement.

- October 25, 2019: ET identified the GLSEN Respect Awards in Los Angeles as their last red-carpet appearance together. ET’s report places that appearance before the breakup news.
- December 2019: E! noted that Mills’s last Instagram post featuring Petsch was from a Disneyland trip. This was a social-media detail, not a confirmed breakup date.
- February 19–20, 2020: The breakup was reported on February 19 and confirmed by Mills the following day.
- 2021: Petsch discussed why she had chosen not to speak publicly about the breakup and why she wanted to keep relationships more private.
What did Travis Mills say?
Mills’s February 20, 2020 post confirmed that the relationship had ended. Teen Vogue reproduced his words: “While it pains me our journey has come to a close, I mean it when I say I’m so incredibly grateful to have shared the last 3 years with someone as compassionate, smart & wonderful as Madelaine.” He added that he had “no regrets.” His statement expressed gratitude for their time together but did not give a reason for the breakup.
Why did they break up?
The available reporting does not establish a verified reason. Coverage mentioned fewer social-media appearances and the pair attending some events separately as signs that fueled speculation before the split became public. Those observations do not show why the relationship ended, and neither person’s cited public comments provide a cause.

Petsch later described the pressure she felt to explain the breakup, not the reason for it. In a 2021 interview with ELLE, she said, “In my previous relationship [with musician Travis Mills], I feel like a lot of people felt like I owed them an explanation as to why we broke up.” She added, “So I felt like taking a step back from the public eye when it comes to my relationships was the right move for me.” ELLE’s interview presents those comments as an explanation of her privacy choice.

Petsch later said she chose not to comment publicly because silence felt most authentic to her. Cosmopolitan reported that she had shared a lot of the relationship online and felt people expected an explanation; she also intended to keep personal relationships off YouTube. These remarks explain how she approached public discussion of the breakup, not what caused it.
