Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White went from mentor and apprentice to public adversaries—and, according to later interviews, to friendly contact again. The feud was real, but the most dramatic account of its cause comes from contested recollections about a reservations book at Ramsay’s Aubergine restaurant, not a court finding. White said in 2007 that they were not speaking; by 2021 and 2024, published reports described messages and a renewed friendship.

How Ramsay and White’s relationship began

Ramsay joined White at Harvey’s in London in 1988, according to Le Monde’s 2024 profile. White was his employer and mentor. Ramsay later recalled that White had worked with leading chefs before he arrived, and said that during his time there they helped the restaurant win two Michelin stars.

Ramsay’s own description of the bond is affectionate: “My first real mentor was Marco Pierre White. And he was, what, six, seven years older than me? He was like a big brother, almost like a sort of big brother-stroke-father I never had.” The quote appeared in a retrospective interview with Robb Report Singapore. Ramsay also said he eventually believed he needed to leave White’s “stable” to find something different.

What was the Aubergine reservations-book dispute?

A central episode in accounts of the falling-out concerns a reservations book stolen from Aubergine, the restaurant where Ramsay was then working. In a 2007 report, The Guardian described Ramsay’s admission that he arranged the theft and blamed White. The newspaper quoted Ramsay speaking to food writer Bill Buford: “It was my one stroke of genius, fucking someone over without his knowing that I was the one who did it.”

The Guardian also reported that White threatened legal action for malicious falsehood and that the relevant chapter was withdrawn from Ramsay’s autobiography. This is a reported account of the dispute; it does not establish that a court determined what happened. The men’s later recollections should likewise be read as their own accounts, not as a single agreed history.

How the two chefs described the mentorship

White’s account

In the 2007 Guardian interview, White rejected the idea that they had been personal friends, saying: “No. Gordon worked for me. I helped set up his first deal at Aubergine.” He also said they were no longer speaking at that point.

White later discussed his help in Ramsay’s early career with British GQ. He said, “Did I pay for him to go to Paris? Yes, I gave him £10,000 in 1990,” and added that he had secured Ramsay’s first business deal. Asked whether he made Ramsay cry at Harvey’s, White replied: “He made himself cry. He wanted to do it.” These are White’s recollections, not independently verified findings.

Ramsay’s account

Ramsay has described the relationship as both important and difficult: he praised White as a mentor while also explaining that he needed to move beyond his mentor’s restaurant. In a 2010 interview, Ramsay called White “my mentor and chief sparring partner” and joked that he had watched White on Hell’s Kitchen. The Guardian’s 2010 interview shows the public teasing continued, but does not by itself prove they had reconciled.

Did Ramsay and White reconcile?

The later published accounts point to friendlier contact. In a 2021 interview, White told The Standard that he had not fallen out with Ramsay “in 25 years,” showed the interviewer their messages, and was noted in the article as having visited Ramsay’s Street Burger. In 2024, Le Monde described them as having formed a solid friendship and reported that Ramsay showed the journalist friendly texts.

Those reports make the 2007 “not speaking” account a dated snapshot, not a reliable description of their later contact. They support saying the two had friendly communication by the time of the 2021 and 2024 interviews; they do not reveal the full private history or establish the precise moment their relationship changed. Ramsay’s professional respect remained evident in his 2024 praise of White: “Marco wasn’t cooking, he was creating works of art.” He added, “He could arrange food on a plate the way Picasso would paint on a canvas!”

Where to read each chef’s perspective

Readers who want fuller personal accounts can compare White’s memoir, The Devil in the Kitchen, and Ramsay’s autobiography, Humble Pie. Bloomsbury describes White’s memoir as including stories featuring Ramsay (publisher page); Google Books’ bibliographic description says Ramsay’s book covers his working relationship and later feud with White (book record). Both are useful for understanding how each man tells his story, but memoirs are personal accounts, not neutral adjudications of disputed events.
