The story between The Mandalorian Season 2 and Season 3 is in The Book of Boba Fett: Luke trains Grogu, then offers him a choice between continuing as his Jedi student and returning to Din Djarin. Grogu chooses Din. The official sources cited below establish the training and reunion, but not that they were separated for exactly two years; treat that duration as unverified.
What happened to Grogu between Seasons 2 and 3?
At the end of The Mandalorian Season 2, Din lets Grogu go with Luke Skywalker, who has answered Grogu’s call through the Force and takes him as a student. The next part of their story unfolds in The Book of Boba Fett, which StarWars.com places within The Mandalorian timeline. Its Chapter 6 follows Luke’s instruction, Din’s visit, and the decision that brings Grogu back to him. StarWars.com’s series guide describes the series as the point where Din and Grogu reunite; its Chapter 6 guide covers the events leading to that reunion.
That makes The Book of Boba Fett the continuity bridge for viewers who go straight from the Season 2 finale to The Mandalorian Season 3. The third season began streaming on March 1, 2023, with Din and Grogu’s continuing adventures at its center, according to StarWars.com’s Season 3 announcement.
Did Grogu choose Luke or the Mandalorian?
Luke gives Grogu a choice: stay and continue Jedi training, or return to Din. Grogu chooses Din and the Mandalorian path. The official Din Djarin databank summarizes the decision and outcome.

- 11-INCH STAR WARS ACTION FIGURE: This kid-friendly 11-inch scale (28 cm) Mandalorian action figure features design and detail inspired by the iconic bounty hunter
- ACTIVATE THE ACTION: Press the buttons on the jetpack to raise the Mandalorian's arms -- the left button for his left arm, right button for his right arm, and both buttons at once to raise both arms
- RAISE HIS ARMS: Manually raise the Mandalorian's arms and then press the buttons again to activate even more bounty hunting action. Rapidly press the buttons for epic blast effects
- GALACTIC SOUND EFFECTS (BATTERIES INCLUDED): This Mandalorian figure also features battle sound effects when his buttons are pushed
The choice matters because Grogu’s return is not simply a training session cut short by circumstance. Luke presents a real alternative, and Grogu opts for the bond and life he shares with Din. That is an interpretation of the scene, but it is grounded in the official account of Luke offering the choice and Grogu choosing the Mandalorian.
Din’s own words underline that he sees Grogu as belonging among the Mandalorians. In the Chapter 6 guide, he says, “As a Mandalorian foundling, he should have this. It’s his right.” The line frames Grogu’s place with Din as more than companionship: Din recognizes a claim to Mandalorian belonging.

Does Grogu become a Jedi after training with Luke?
Luke’s instruction gives Grogu experience with Jedi teaching and leaves his connection to the Force part of his story. It does not establish that he completed his training or became a Jedi Knight. In a 2026 StarWars.com interview, Jon Favreau describes Grogu as having “a little Jedi influence” and as “an apprentice Mandalorian.” That characterization supports a blended identity rather than a completed Jedi status.
So Luke’s time with Grogu changes what Grogu has experienced, not the basic direction of his choice. He returns to Din with Jedi influence, while his relationship to Mandalorian life remains central. Reading the training as something Grogu carries forward, rather than something erased by his return, is a narrative interpretation—not a stated rule about how Jedi instruction works.

What does Grogu’s return mean for Season 3?
Season 3 continues with Din and Grogu together after the events of The Book of Boba Fett. Grogu is no longer only the foundling Din protects: he has had instruction from Luke and has made a choice about where he belongs. At the same time, Luke’s role does not replace Din’s; the story reconnects Grogu’s Force training with his life alongside the Mandalorian.
Season 3 director and executive producer Rick Famuyiwa has discussed the season as building on earlier story threads, including Din and Grogu’s reunion in The Book of Boba Fett. His StarWars.com interview helps explain why the intervening series matters to the season’s setup. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have also discussed timeline planning and the way The Book of Boba Fett intersects with The Mandalorian; that context supports treating the series as part of the story, but it does not specify how long Luke trained Grogu. Their interview does not settle an exact duration.
Is the “two years” duration confirmed?
The official materials cited here establish that Luke trained Grogu and that Grogu later chose to return to Din. They do not state that the separation lasted exactly two years. The title’s “two years” should therefore be understood as unverified framing, not a confirmed in-universe interval. The character consequences—the training, the choice, and the reunion—can be discussed without assigning them a precise elapsed time.
