What Got Cut from the Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon (2025) and Why

Director Dean DeBlois named two deleted scenes included with the 2025 home-entertainment release of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon: a sequence called “Beach Break” and a short nighttime moment in the blacksmith stall where Astrid nearly catches Hiccup with Toothless. Both were removed to improve pacing. He said “Beach Break” slowed the film, and the blacksmith moment gave the audience no new information.

The two deleted scenes named for the home release

“Beach Break”

“Beach Break” follows “Test Drive,” the sequence that comes after Hiccup and Toothless’s first major flight. In the 2010 animated film, the pair stop to cook fish and are bothered by Terrible Terrors. DeBlois said the live-action version of this section was shot. In editing, it felt lagging and heavy. The filmmakers tried taking it out and concluded that the surrounding scenes and the visual storytelling already carried the story information the section was meant to deliver. Universal’s official film page lists “Deleted Scene – Beach Break” in its video gallery.

The second scene is a brief nighttime interaction in the blacksmith stall, in which Astrid almost discovers Hiccup with Toothless. DeBlois described it as cute, but said it did not add new information, and that removing it helped the overall pacing. This explanation comes from DeBlois’s interview with Moviefone. Universal’s film page does not independently list this scene, so the interview is the only source for it.

How the director explained the cuts

DeBlois’s reasoning is consistent across both scenes: each one repeated something the film already conveyed, or slowed a section that did not need more time. On “Beach Break,” his summary was direct:

“So, it allowed the pace to increase, but it also just allowed us to move on.” (Dean DeBlois, writer and director, Moviefone interview, July 15, 2025)

“Beach Break” After “Test Drive” Hiccup and Toothless cooking fish while bothered by Terrible Terrors Slowed the section; other scenes and visuals already carried the story information Universal film page gallery; Moviefone interview

Other changes the editor described

Editor Wyatt Smith, ACE, discussed adaptation choices in a Boris FX “Art of the Cut” interview published July 17, 2025. He said the animated film’s Giant’s Causeway beat, in which Hiccup learns that dragons are not fireproof inside, was not needed in the live-action cut. The climax instead shows Hiccup damaging the Red Death’s wings, which conveys the same idea without a separate explanatory scene.

Smith’s account is about an adaptation decision, not one of the two scenes DeBlois named for the home release. Keep the two lists separate when you describe what was removed.

How live-action timing reshaped the edit

Smith also said the live-action timing shaped the edit. Some story and character beats were extended, while other material was shortened to keep sequences moving and to leave room for the longer flying scenes that the film is built around. DeBlois, for his part, described the process as “revisiting old material through a new lens,” with the goal of deepening relationships and mythology and leaning into live-action aesthetics. That context explains the overall approach, but it does not establish any deleted-scene rationale beyond the two reasons DeBlois gave.

Finding the cuts on home video

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s July 14, 2025 press release announced the home release and said it includes more than 75 minutes of bonus content, including deleted scenes. That figure is the total bonus runtime, not the length of the deleted scenes. The same announcement set these dates:

  • Digital rental and purchase: July 15, 2025
  • 4K UHD and Blu-ray: August 12, 2025

These are 2025 announcement dates. This article is being published in October 2026, so check current formats, territories, and retailer or streaming availability before buying. Universal’s press release is the primary source for the dates, and the official film page lists the “Beach Break” deleted scene in its gallery.
