In Gods, Guns & Missionaries, historian Manu S. Pillai argues that modern Hindu identity was shaped through encounters with European missionaries, colonial power and Indian responses—not simply inherited as a uniform, unchanged identity. The book follows debate, adaptation and resistance across a long period, and connects those encounters to conditions that later helped prepare the ground for Hindu nationalism. That is Pillai’s interpretation of a complex history, not a single-cause explanation or an uncontested consensus.

What is Manu S. Pillai’s argument in Gods, Guns & Missionaries?

Pillai’s central concern is how political and religious encounters changed the ways people understood and represented Hinduism. The book considers Hindu communities alongside European missionaries, colonial authorities and Indian reformers, emphasizing that religious identity was shaped through interaction. Communities did not merely receive outside ideas: they could answer, dispute, adapt to or resist them.

That scope matters. Pillai is not offering a comprehensive history of Hindu philosophy or sacred texts. As Shubham Sharma’s February 22, 2025 review in Scroll.in quotes Pillai: “The book is not a history of Hindu philosophy…or of the Vedas and holy texts…it is only an investigation into human action and reaction in the context of political conquest, cultural domination and resistance.”

How did colonialism shape modern Hindu identity?

The book’s account unfolds across distinct stages, rather than treating missionary contact and British rule as one event. European missionaries arrived in India before the later consolidation of British colonial power. They encountered practices they found unfamiliar and described them through European religious and cultural assumptions. With colonial rule, the political setting changed: European power and Western frames of thought gained greater influence, and Hindu communities faced new pressures to explain and reimagine religion.

Penguin Random House India’s publisher description summarizes this trajectory as an encounter transformed by political power under the Raj. The point is not that colonialism created Hinduism from nothing, but that conquest and cultural dominance changed the circumstances in which religious ideas and identities were debated.

In her February 5, 2025 review for The India Forum, Arshia Sattar characterizes the book as tracing roughly 300 years of Hindu-Christian encounter and the colonial psychosocial mechanisms involved in Hinduism’s transformation. She also foregrounds Pillai’s account of how religious authority and state power contributed to modern political identity.

What role did Christian missionaries play?

Missionary writing and criticism are important to Pillai’s story because they helped make Hindu practices objects of description, judgment and debate. But the encounter was not one-way. The book examines how Hindu interlocutors responded to missionary arguments, as well as how religious ideas could be presented or adapted under changing political conditions.

The author’s perspective, discussed in The Indian Express interview, also cautions against reducing interreligious history to one fixed pattern. Hindu and Muslim communities, for example, experienced both amicable exchanges and tensions. Different encounters should not be collapsed into a single story of conflict or cooperation.

How does the book connect colonial-era change to Hindu nationalism?

Pillai links colonial-era changes in religious and social ideas to conditions that helped prepare the ground for later Hindu nationalism. The proposed pathway runs through shifts in how religion was described, defended and related to political authority—not through a claim that colonialism alone caused a later political movement. Reformers, communities, institutions and changing relations between state power and religious authority all matter to the argument.

This framing makes the book a study of historical conditions and responses, rather than a simple origin story. It asks how encounters under colonial rule contributed to political identities that developed later, while leaving room for other causes and interpretations.

What are the book’s limits and points of debate?

Reviews agree on the importance of the book’s focus on missionary material and Hinduism’s capacity for change, but they do not treat its framing as beyond question. Sai Priya Chodavarapu’s February 14, 2025 review in Bṛhat praises those elements while raising concerns about selective focus and the treatment of caste and Brahminical authority. These questions affect how readers assess which forces and voices receive emphasis in Pillai’s account.

For readers weighing the historical interpretation, useful points of comparison are the periodization of early missionary contact versus later colonial rule; the agency assigned to missionaries, colonial institutions, reformers and communities; the relationship between religious change and political identity; and the weight given to caste and Brahminical authority. The reviews offer different emphases rather than a definitive ranking of explanations.
