How the essay and withdrawal fit into the timeline
On July 10, 2024, Clooney published a New York Times essay arguing that Democrats should choose a new presidential nominee. Biden withdrew from the race afterward. Clooney’s remarks in Venice on September 1 were his first public response to the fallout from the essay, according to The Washington Post.
