In comments published just after the Stranger Things finale, he said he wanted to keep acting selectively and expected music to take up much of his near-term attention. By July 2026, he had released a second solo album and completed a tour, while continuing to pursue acting and directing.
What career change did Finn Wolfhard announce?
There was no announcement of a permanent career change. A Jan. 3, 2026, TV Insider report quoting Wolfhard after an Esquire interview said he had “nothing on the books officially” for another acting role at that time. He also said: “I definitely want to pursue and keep on acting but only if it’s something that I’m really in love with.”
His immediate plans leaned toward music. “Other than that, I’m probably going to tour a little bit with my band next year and put out another album,” he said. Those were intentions expressed at the time, not a guarantee that every planned activity would happen.
What has he done since those comments?
A July 14, 2026, Los Angeles Times profile provides a later update: Wolfhard had released his second solo album, Fire From the Hip, after Happy Birthday, completed a 22-date tour and recorded a new album. The profile also says acting and directing remain on his agenda and notes commitments to film projects. It presents music as an active part of a broader career, not a replacement for acting.

Wolfhard has described making his own work as a reason to expand beyond performing in projects created by others: “I spent my whole childhood standing on marks that other people told me to stand on and saying lines that other people told me to say. Why wouldn’t I want to make my own stuff?”
Does Mike Wheeler’s ending explain Wolfhard’s real-life plans?
No. The finale’s ending for Mike Wheeler is a story choice, not a statement about Wolfhard’s career. Netflix’s finale explainer says Mike follows his passion for storytelling and becomes a writer in the years after the events of the series. That describes the character, not an announced writing career for the actor.

Co-creator Ross Duffer described the closing basement scene as the characters “saying goodbye to their childhood.” Matt Duffer praised Wolfhard’s performance as Mike moves through grief and sadness toward “bittersweet happiness.” The scene closes the characters’ story and passes the torch to another group of kids; it does not signal that Wolfhard is leaving acting.

Wolfhard’s official store lists Fire From The Hip as a 12-inch vinyl edition released July 10, 2026, and lists CD and cassette formats as well. Its music page also lists physical formats for Happy Birthday. Availability can change; the store is the relevant source for current formats. Amazon Music has an artist listing for Wolfhard, but that listing alone does not establish stock of physical albums.
