It explores changes in Panhĩ Apinajé food culture, bringing health concerns into conversation with cultural practices and ancestral knowledge. FGV reported that the film was selected for the 50th ANPOCS Annual Meeting and scheduled for a screening on October 1, 2026; that date has passed.
What is De primeiro era assim about?
The 2026 short follows the food culture of the Panhĩ Apinajé, who live in the Apinajé Indigenous Territory in the Bico do Papagaio region of northern Tocantins, Brazil. FGV describes the film as investigating both changes in food habits and efforts to preserve food traditions.
According to FGV, the film’s narrative grew from research by Lucas Pepkrâhô Apinajé, a medical student who identified a relationship between increasing chronic diseases in the community and recent changes in eating habits. This is the research and film’s framing; the reported account does not quantify the trend or establish an independently verified causal link.
Food as culture and knowledge
The film treats dietary change as more than a nutrition issue. FGV’s account connects food to rituals, cultural practices, and ancestral knowledge, while describing pressures associated with proximity to a highway and the arrival of ultra-processed products in village life.

What does the film show, and what language is it in?
De primeiro era assim is spoken in Panhĩ. FGV says it includes elders’ testimonies, referred to as me’õmpej, archival images, and the preparation of xwỳkupu, a traditional cassava cake with meat. Together, these elements place contemporary food changes alongside memory and everyday cultural practice.
Who made the documentary, and how long is it?
Gabriel Cardoso, Inés Velásquez, Laura Guimarães, and Indigenous researcher Lucas Pepkrâhô Apinajé share direction. FGV CPDOC’s event listing identifies it as a 2026 production with a runtime of 17 minutes.

Why was it selected for the 50th ANPOCS Annual Meeting?
FGV reported the film’s selection for the 50th ANPOCS Annual Meeting, but its announcement does not state the selection criteria or explain why the programmers chose it. The subject matter gives the film a clear focus—food, health, and cultural continuity in Apinajé life—but that should not be mistaken for an official explanation of the selection.
FGV scheduled a screening for Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 7:00 PM. Its announcement was published October 5, after the scheduled session, so the screening is a past event rather than an upcoming opportunity.

The documentary is distinct from a broader FGV CPDOC collaboration on Apinajé history and archives. A related photographic collection, Memória histórica e cultural do Povo Indígena Apinajé: coleção fotográfica 1960–2009, was selected for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean. It documents practices, rituals, ways of life, and territorial changes across nearly five decades, with photographs by Roberto DaMatta, Odair Giraldin, Luis Olinto, and Raquel Pereira Rocha. That recognition applies to the collection, not to De primeiro era assim or its ANPOCS selection.
