Spoilers for Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon through season three. At the end of the latest aired season, Aegon II Targaryen is alive: he is at Harrenhal, reunited with Sunfyre, and making plans with Aemond. In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, however, Aegon eventually dies after being poisoned in King’s Landing. The book ending has not yet happened on television.
Where Aegon stands in the show
Season three ends with Aegon alive at Harrenhal. He has reunited with Sunfyre and is planning with his brother Aemond to reclaim the throne. That is the television story’s current endpoint—not Aegon’s death.
HBO’s U.S. announcement scheduled season three as eight weekly episodes, beginning June 21, 2026, and ending August 9, 2026, with HBO and HBO Max listed as U.S. viewing destinations. HBO’s season-three announcement
The finale also signals that Aegon has changed. Showrunner Ryan Condal, explaining why Aegon did not kill Aemond, said, “That would be no fun,” adding, “He’s learned a lot in Season 3 here, Aegon.” The remark was reported by GamesRadar+; it addresses Aegon’s decision about Aemond, not his eventual fate.

What happens to Aegon in Fire & Blood?
In the book’s account, Aegon survives Rhaenyra’s death, but the war and his rule continue. He is on Dragonstone when Sunfyre dies from his wounds. Aegon later returns to King’s Landing.
After a council meeting, Aegon climbs into his litter and asks to be carried to the royal sept. His usual flagon of Arbor red wine is with him. When his escort opens the litter, he is dead, blood on his lips. His nephew, Aegon the Younger, becomes king. This account is summarized in a fan-maintained reference to the published fictional history.

Who poisoned him?
The book account does not settle the poisoner’s identity. Several people are suspected of conspiring against Aegon, but it would be inaccurate to present any one person as definitively responsible.
Book fate versus the latest TV episode
| Question | Fire & Blood | Show through season three |
|---|---|---|
| Has Aegon’s death happened? | Yes. He is found dead in his litter in King’s Landing. | No. He is alive at Harrenhal at the season-three endpoint. |
| What is Sunfyre’s status? | Sunfyre dies from his wounds on Dragonstone before Aegon returns to King’s Landing. | Aegon reunites with Sunfyre at Harrenhal; season-three coverage describes changes to the book events around Sunfyre’s apparent death and return. |
| What is established about the cause or agent? | Aegon is poisoned, but the poisoner is not identified as a settled fact. | No cause of death or poisoner is established, because Aegon has not died on screen. |
The adaptation has changed relevant events around Sunfyre, so the book provides a possible direction, not proof of the exact scene or circumstances the show will use. The two continuities should not be treated as a single timeline.
