If you mean his adult-era return as the Revolutionary Army’s chief of staff, the clearest numbered reference is episode 679. There is also a separate TV special, One Piece: Episode of Sabo, and a live-action Netflix adaptation with its own Sabo cameo. Those versions are easy to mix up, so the sections below separate them.
Sabo’s first appearance: episode 494 of the original anime
In the original One Piece anime, Sabo’s debut is episode 494, titled “Enter Sabo!” That episode introduces him as a child, which is the story phase most viewers mean when they ask about his first appearance. The episode listing comes from a fan-maintained episode reference rather than an official Toei episode database, so treat the number as a well-established fan index entry rather than an official credit. The official Sabo character profile confirms his identity and story role but does not list episode numbers, so it does not independently verify the 494 figure.
Later episodes that feature Sabo
When Sabo returns as an adult, the most useful numbered reference is episode 679. Its title, “Dashing onto the Scene – The Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo!”, names him directly in his later role, so it works as a locator if you remember the adult Sabo but not the childhood arc. The same indexed episode references also point to later Sabo-related material at episode 880. Those entries show later appearances, but they do not form a complete episode-by-episode list, and they are not a substitute for checking the full run of episodes.
The official character profile supports this later story: it identifies Sabo as the Revolutionary Army’s chief of staff and describes his reunion with Luffy in Dressrosa.

One Piece: Episode of Sabo is a special, not a numbered episode
Toei Animation’s catalog lists One Piece: Episode of Sabo as a 102-minute TV special released in August 2015. It is a standalone retelling centered on Sabo rather than a regular numbered episode in the series. A secondary synopsis describes it as covering Sabo’s childhood and the Dressrosa story. Because it is a special, it does not have a regular episode number, so if you are searching for “episode 494” or “episode 679,” this release will not appear in that sequence.
The Netflix live-action adaptation
The live-action Netflix series is a different production with its own numbering. A March 2026 GamesRadar report says Sabo appears silently in season 2, episode 1, “The Beginning and the End.” That is a press report, not an official Netflix or episode-credit confirmation, so check the season 2 credits on Netflix if you need a verified cameo. It has no connection to the anime episode numbers above.

| Version | Where Sabo appears | Format | Story phase | How firm the evidence is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original anime, debut | Episode 494, “Enter Sabo!” | Numbered episode | Childhood | Fan-maintained episode reference; the official profile does not list episode numbers |
| Original anime, adult role | Episode 679, “Dashing onto the Scene – The Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo!” | Numbered episode | Later, Revolutionary Army chief of staff | Indexed episode title; the official profile confirms the role |
| Sabo-focused special | One Piece: Episode of Sabo | TV special, 102 minutes, August 2015 | Childhood and Dressrosa retelling | Toei catalog for existence, format and runtime; synopsis from a secondary source |
| Live-action Netflix series | Season 2, episode 1, “The Beginning and the End” | Live-action numbered episode | Silent cameo | March 2026 GamesRadar report; not confirmed against an official Netflix credit |
Use this checklist to pick the right answer:
- If you mean the first time Sabo shows up in the original anime, look for episode 494.
- If you mean his adult role as chief of staff, look for episode 679.
- If you are looking for a standalone movie-length story about Sabo, search for the 2015 TV special.
- If you are watching the live-action series, check season 2, episode 1 and confirm the cameo in the credits.
Numbering differs between versions, so always confirm which adaptation a given episode belongs to before using it as a reference.
