Emma Heming Willis used the phrase “his brain is failing him” in an August 2025 interview to describe how frontotemporal dementia (FTD) was affecting Bruce Willis, particularly his ability to communicate. She said he remained mobile and in good overall physical health, while his language was diminishing and the family had learned to communicate with him differently. The phrase was her personal description, not a clinical term or a statement from Willis himself.

Speaking with Diane Sawyer for an ABC News interview published Aug. 26, 2025, Heming Willis said: “Bruce is in really great health overall, you know. It’s just his brain that is failing him.” She also said, “The language is going, and, you know, we’ve learned to adapt,” describing the family’s communication as “a different way.” ABC News’ interview report places the remark in the context of his communication changes and the family’s efforts to stay connected.
Her wording contrasts his physical condition, as she described it, with the effects of dementia on his language and communication. It should not be read as a medical assessment or as a comprehensive account of his health.
What is known about his diagnosis
Willis’s family publicly announced an aphasia diagnosis in 2022 and his retirement from acting. In 2023, the family said that the diagnosis had been identified as frontotemporal dementia. The Guardian’s 2025 report recounts the earlier announcements and Heming Willis’s account of changes she noticed, including his becoming quieter and more withdrawn.

In June 2026, Heming Willis was reported as clarifying that Willis’s FTD variant primarily affects language. She also said he recognizes loved ones. Those details are attributed to her, not an independent clinical assessment, and they should not be generalized to every person with FTD. Hindustan Times reported her clarification in coverage of a later podcast interview.
How the family has adapted
Heming Willis said the family had changed how it communicates with Willis as his language declined. She described her aim as maintaining a connection: “I just wanna feel that I have a connection with him. And I do.”

ABC News also reported that the family arranged professional caregivers and a separate home they described as safe, quiet, and easier for him to navigate, while prioritizing the children’s needs. Those are reported decisions made for this family; they are not a prescribed care plan for others facing dementia.

- It does not provide a clinical evaluation: the comments are family-reported updates, not details from medical records or a statement from his clinicians.
